1 The Conners Character’s Story Makes A Happy Ending In Season 7 Much Less Likely

Although The Conners season 6 finale wasn’t too dark, the Roseanne spinoff did set up a new roadblock between the eponymous family and their potential happy ending. The Conners’ cast of characters have all struggled with serious issues throughout the six seasons of the series. Since Roseanne’s spinoff began in 2018, the family sitcom has tackled unplanned pregnancies, immigration, addiction, alcoholism, unemployment, workplace pay disputes, poverty, and income inequality. Despite this, The Conners season 7 briefly seemed set to grant the heroes an unexpectedly happy ending when the hardware store that Ben’s family-owned burned down.

Only a show like The Conners could make a disastrous fire feel like a big win for its perpetually unlucky central family, but Ben was shocked and delighted to discover that the store was well-insured. He received a windfall and used the money to buy Hardware magazine as well as giving his co-worker and father-in-law, Dan, enough money to pay off his mortgage. This rare injection of cash seemed like it might set the Conners up for a brighter future, but The Conners season 6 finale imperiled this optimistic possibility only a few episodes later with Mark’s subplot.

Mark’s New Job Risks The Conners Season 7’s Happy Ending
Mark Began Working For Online Scammers In Season 6’s Finale

In season 6, episode 13, “Less Money, More Problems,” Mark realized that he needed to work two jobs if he wanted to save up and afford the University of Chicago’s tuition fees. Mark initially attempted to work as a repo man, but he found that he was unable to repossess a struggling single mother’s car. Instead, he began working with a group of scammers who he befriended while in college, gaining a job that was as lucrative as it was shady. Mark’s illegal new job could ruin The Conners season 7’s happy ending if he eventually gets caught.

Mark’s work as a scammer makes the odds of the family’s woes coming to an end vanishingly unlikely. The Conners season 6’s finale centered on Becky and Darlene’s feud, so the episode didn’t devote much screen time to Mark’s new work. However, from his colleagues using pseudonyms and their admission that the enterprise wasn’t entirely above board, it was clear that the job involved scamming people online. There is a good chance that, like Mark’s earlier attempts to sell students admission essays he wrote to save for college tuition money, this scheme will end in catastrophe for him.

Why The Conners Season 7 Needs A Happy Ending
Roseanne’s Spinoff Has Put Its Heroes Through A Lot

Although The Conners season 6 set up a happier season 7 ending with Dan paying off his mortgage and Ben buying Hardware magazine, it is not surprising that Mark’s new job threatens this change in the family’s fortunes. The Roseanne spinoff’s final season seemed more optimistic, but the clan has always been thwarted every time they seem to be heading for financial stability. As a result, The Conners season 7 should end their story happily. With every passing year, the heroes of Roseanne and The Conners have faced an unending stream of tragedies, so they have earned a comparatively upbeat final chapter.
