10 Things To Remember Before Will Trent Season 3

Will Trent is finally returning for its third season in early 2025 after a seven-month hiatus, and the new episodes have a lot to cover after all the dramatic and shocking developments in season 2. The ABC police procedural, created by Liz Heldens, Daniel T. Thomsen, and Karin Slaughter, is based on Slaughter’s book series of the same name. It follows Will Trent, a GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) agent whose special skills make him the best in his field. Will’s tumultuous (and mysterious) upbringing in the foster care system also shapes who he is on the show.

Over the course of his run on Will Trent, Ramón Rodríguez’s character has revealed a lot about his past and the secrets of those close to him, whether in his work or personal life (or both). In the shortened 10-episode season 2, Will has gone through many ups and downs. He reunited with Angie Polaski, his on-again, off-again lover who grew up with him in an orphanage. Will also learned more about his family and even recovered some of his repressed traumatic memories. So, when Will Trent season 3 premiered, the main character and other characters faced many problems.

Crystal is a serial killer who kills sex offenders in Will Trent season 2
At the end of Will Trent season 2, episode 9, Will learned that his team was investigating a serial killer who targeted middle-aged men who were also sex offenders. So, the characters continued to search for the culprit in episode 10, also known as the finale. Although the case initially seemed normal, the audience soon discovered that it was not normal after it was revealed that Crystal was the killer.

As some may recall from Will Trent season 1, Crystal is the daughter of the woman Lenny Broussard dated after his release from prison. Lenny abused Angie when she was younger, and she knew Lenny hadn’t changed during his years in prison. Unfortunately, Angie was right. Crystal was Lenny’s latest victim, and of course, the abuse was incredibly traumatic. As a result, Crystal began killing sex offenders who reminded her of Lenny. When viewers learned of her actions in the Will Trent season 2 finale, it became clear that Crystal’s story wouldn’t have a happy ending.

Crystal Dies While Running Away From Angie
Angie, who helped Crystal get back on her feet, was the first to know that the young woman’s killing spree didn’t stop after Lenny. In the shocking season 2 finale of Will Trent, Angie puts the pieces together and concludes that Crystal is the serial killer that Will, Faith, and Ormewood are looking for. She attempts to confront Crystal herself. Unfortunately, Angie’s attempts to get close to the teenager end in the worst possible way.

Angie finds Crystal in the woods with her next victim, the older woman who scares her away. However, Crystal also panics and runs away from Angie. Protagonist Will Trent chases her to a river, which Crystal tries to cross, but she slips on a rock and falls, hitting her head. The blow knocks Crystal unconscious and she begins to drift down the river, face down. By the time Angie reaches her, Crystal is dead, completely devastating the woman who tried so hard to save her.

Will Discovers Angie Lied About Lenny’s Death
After Crystal died, it was only a matter of time before the truth behind Lenny’s death came to light. Unfortunately, it was Will who put the pieces together. To refresh fans’ memories, Crystal killed Lenny in Will Trent season 1 and Angie helped cover up the crime by claiming she killed the older man in self-defense. Michael Ormewood (who had seemingly gotten away with it) helped Angie. However, after Crystal disappeared, Angie had nowhere to hide.

While making his decision, Will fantasized about his possible future with Angie in the Will Trent season 2 finale. He saw them having children and growing old together.
When Will discovered the truth, he had a difficult choice to make. He could either turn Angie in and destroy their relationship forever or continue the farce Angie had created and stay with her. While making his decision, Will imagines his possible future with Angie in the Will Trent season 2 finale. He sees them having children and growing old together. Sadly, this dream will probably never come true after Will’s actions in the finale.

Will Captures Angie in the Will Trent season 2 finale
Will knows he can’t ignore what Angie did in the divisive Will Trent season 2 finale. Even though he desperately wants to save Angie, he can’t this time. Part of the reason Will and Angie’s relationship is so tumultuous is because he constantly wants to save her, which makes Angie extremely angry. However, Will chooses work/law/moralitye and making false statements in regard to Lenny’s case. Afterward, Angie heartbreakingly told him, “I thought you might choose me.” Police officers took Angie away, and Will was obviously heartbroken, despite knowing he was doing the right thing at the end of Will Trent season 2.

Will Disappeared After Arresting Angie

Even though Will didn’t choose Angie in Will Trent season 2, episode 10, that didn’t mean his decision was easy. And after arresting her, Will’s broken heart convinced him to run away. Amanda later showed up at Will’s house looking for him. However, she just found Nico, who informed the GBI Deputy Director of Will’s absence, leaving everyone wondering where Will went at the end of Will Trent season 2.

It’s unclear where Will went, but it was obvious that he needed to get away from everything after breaking his relationship with Angie.

Will packed a duffel, told Nico they could move into the main house, gave them enough money to pay for utilities for a while, and took Betty with him when he left. When Will Trent season 3 releases, the premiere will pick up months after Will’s disappearance. It’s unclear where Will went, but it was obvious that he needed to get away from everything after breaking his relationship with Angie. According to Ramón Rodríguez’s interview with TVLine, Will is a brand new man in season 3. He teased:

Amanda Continued Lying About Planting Evidence On A Suspect Decades Ago

Although it may not seem like it, not every big moment in Will Trent season 2 happened during the finale. Earlier in the season, Amanda confronted her past when her former offender got out of jail and began stalking her. The audience (and Will and Faith Mitchell) later learned that the only reason why he was in prison was because Amanda planted evidence on him decades ago. She knew he was a repeat offender. However, Amanda could never form a case solid enough for the judicial system, so, she took matters into her own hands.

When Will Trent returns with season 3, Amanda and Faith will likely still be dealing with the fallout from season 2, episode 5, “Capt. Duke Wagner’s Daughter.”

While Amanda confessed her past actions to Will and Faith, she never came clean to the GBI. In order to keep her job, Amanda had to continue lying. Unfortunately, Amanda’s deceit dramatically affected her relationship with Faith. The younger woman was quite disappointed in Amanda and let her know it, forever changing their dynamic. When Will Trent returns with season 3, Amanda and Faith will likely still be dealing with the fallout from season 2, episode 5, “Capt. Duke Wagner’s Daughter.”

Will and Angie’s relationship isn’t the only one in Will Trent — during season 2, Faith also had a bit of a romance. Faith had a casual fling with Luke, a reporter, but she was never able to fully commit to him. However, at the end of the season 2 finale, Faith sought out Luke for comfort following her tumultuous day, suggesting their relationship was growing more serious.

It’s unknown if Faith will make her romance with Luke official in Will Trent season 3. Since the premiere picks up months after the season 2 finale, it’s very possible that Faith completely severed ties with Luke. Or, they could be in a full-blown relationship. Whatever the case, Faith deserves to be happy, whether that means she is with Luke or if she is single, and the premiere should reveal that.

Gina Is Divorcing Ormewood

As for developments concerning Ormewood that Will Trent fans should remember before season 3, his family is essentially falling apart. His wife, Gina, checked herself into a mental health facility earlier in the season, and Ormewood grew closer to his children as a result of being their sole provider. He certainly hasn’t been the best Will Trent character since its premiere. However, Ormewood grew a lot and attempted to fix his past mistakes in season 2. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for Gina.

Gina also told Ormewood that she planned on moving far away and taking their two children with her, gutting Ormewood. He isn’t about to let his kids go without a fight, though.

Gina returned during the Will Trent season 2 finale and informed her husband that she wanted a divorce. Of course, this alone was quite upsetting for Ormewood, but she wasn’t finished. Gina also told Ormewood that she planned on moving far away and taking their two children with her, gutting Ormewood. He isn’t about to let his kids go without a fight, though. So, when Will Trent season 3 opens, Ormewood will likely be fighting for custody of his son and daughter.

Will Has Unfinished Business With James Ulster

During Will Trent season 2, episode 2, Will met with James Ulster, the man who killed his birth mother and claims to be his biological father. By the end of the hour, Will still had no idea who his father was, whether it was James or someone else. Consequently, Will’s paternity speculation will probably continue to haunt him in Will Trent season 3.

James may very well be Will’s father, which would be rather unfortunate for the GBI agent. The ABC police procedural TV series isn’t afraid to put Will through the wringer, though, meaning James could still be his dad. Ultimately, Will Trent season 3 has to continue exploring Will’s past, just as season 2 did by having him recover his repressed memory of a traumatic event from his childhood and find his uncle. Perhaps Will finally learns who his biological father is in season 3.

Will Trent Season 3 Has 2 New Important Characters

Will Trent introduces the audience to two new faces in season 3 — Gina Rodriguez as Marion Alba and Scott Foley as Dr. Seth McDale. Rodriguez joins the main cast as Marion, the Assistant District Attorney and Will’s possible new love interest. Meanwhile, as his character’s name suggests, Foley’s Seth is a doctor who also happens to be Angie’s new love interest, but Foley will be a recurring player in season 3, unlike Rodriguez, who is a series regular.

Will Trent season 3’s new casting all but confirms the end of Will and Angie’s relationship after the season 2 finale. Both are engaging in new romances, seemingly moving on from one another. Given that Will arrested Angie at the end of Will Trent season 2, the two characters getting new love interests makes sense, but only time will tell if they are better together or apart (and with different people).
