‘Bridgerton 4’ – A love story that transcends class.
In “Bridgerton 4,” Mr. Benedict falls in love with the maid Sophie after a ball, despite their difference in social status.
Set during the Regency period in 1800s London, the series follows the Bridgerton family and focuses on the love lives of one of the eight children each season. In the new season, the story centers on Benedict, the second son and the most difficult of the siblings to marry. Known for his open and romantic life, Benedict falls madly in love with Sophie – the mysterious girl in the silver dress – whom he meets at the annual ball.
The filmmaker chose the Cinderella love story motif as the catalyst that governs the plot and directs the central conflict in the work. Experts believe that using fairy tale elements is a challenging step, making the story predictable and prone to clichés. However, the film demonstrates a fresh approach by developing the love story between Benedict and Sophie despite their contrasting social statuses and backgrounds.
In Benedict’s eyes, Sophie’s background as a maid was a hindrance to him. After all, a gentleman was not allowed to marry a maid or an illegitimate child. He desired her to become his mistress as the only solution for both of them. However, this proposal shocked Sophie. She feared repeating her mother’s mistakes, sacrificing her dignity for a relationship without a proper status.
The plot places Benedict and Sophie before difficult decisions, leading the audience out of the fairytale realm to look at the dark side of marriage that people faced in the old society.
The subplots continue to delve into the pressures of family happiness, a defining theme throughout the season. Through the characters of Violet and Francesca, the screenwriters portray the hidden struggles of widows in the absence of their husbands. They struggle to remain faithful, even though deep down they yearn for a new source of support. In contrast to her mother and sister, Eloise craves knowledge and freedom, rejecting marriage like other women. This character embodies feminist ideals, helping the film build an image of women who proactively take control of their own destiny in the face of adversity.

The highlight of the film is the performance of the two main actors. Luke Thompson delivers a solid performance as the male lead, successfully portraying a man willing to overcome class prejudices to pursue love. In scenes of psychological struggle, the actor uses restrained acting through his eyes, clearly revealing the conflict between reason and emotion when the character faces a pivotal choice.
Promising actress Yerin Ha impressed with her portrayal of the strong-willed Sophie Baek. Her tough demeanor created a unique charm, winning the heart of the most carefree man in the Bridgerton family. According to Hollywood Reporter , co-star Luke Thompson praised the actress, emphasizing that her professional work ethic contrasted with her witty personality in real life, making it easy for them to find common ground.
The costumes remain a key element of the film’s success. Making her first appearance at the ball, Sophie shone in a shimmering silver gown, exuding an air of pride. According to Town & Country , designer John Glaser stated that the dress was made from Italian silver chiffon and hand-stitched sequins, creating a dazzling effect.

Bridgerton received overwhelmingly positive feedback from viewers. Decider magazine rated the new season as one of the best chapters of the series, reminiscent of the style of Julian Fellowes, a director famous for his works about British high society. According to The Guardian , season four evokes fresh emotions about love during the Regency era, immersing viewers in a more magical world than in previous seasons.
Variety noted that the early episodes crammed too many subplots , diluting the film’s narrative. For example, the lives of newlyweds Penelope and Colin, along with the turmoil surrounding Francesca and Violet, took up most of the screen time, overshadowing the main plot. However, from episode five onwards, the series regained its pace thanks to a more coherent arrangement of subplots, allowing Benedict’s story to better connect with the overall theme of the film.
Bridgerton, adapted from Julia Quinn’s novel of the same name, first aired in late December 2020, breaking viewership records on Netflix, reaching 625 million hours in 28 days. The series uses many real names and places but constructs the story and characters from fiction. According to Netflix Tudum , producer Jess Brownell has confirmed that Eloise and Francesca Bridgerton will be the main characters of seasons 5 and 6.
