3 Yellowstone Stars Returning For New Spinoff Series

Three returning stars have been added to the Yellowstone spinoff Y: Marshals. Luke Grimes is already confirmed to be reprising his role as Kayce Dutton in the spinoff. Y: Marshals will follow Kayce Dutton, the youngest Dutton son, as he joins the U.S. Marshals in Montana, leaving his ranching days in the past.

Per Deadline, Gil Birmingham, Brecken Merrill, and Mo Brings Plenty are now joining the cast of Y: Marshals as well, and will be reprising their previous roles in the hit franchise. Merrill will be reprising his role as Tate Dutton, the son of Kayce, as Birmingham will be reprising his role as Thomas Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty reprising the role of Mo.

Series regulars for Y: Marshals also include Arielle Kiber as Belle, Ash Santos as Andrea, and Tantanka Means as Miles. All three of them will be portraying members of the U.S. Marshals.

What This Update Means for Y: Marshals

Kayce and Tate by a fence in Yellowstone.

With the show choosing to bring back characters from Yellowstone, the characters will bring a sense of familiarity to the audience watching. Even though Y: Marshals is not the same series, there will be a lot about the two Yellowstone shows that are similar.

Y: Marshals is still taking place in Montana, where Yellowstone took place, making it possible to see even more familiar faces in the future. It won’t be so difficult to write other cast members from Yellowstone into the show and create storylines for them, since they all still live in the same state and can easily cross paths.

One member of the Yellowstone cast who will not be reprising their role is Kelsey Asbille, who portrayed Tate’s mother, and Kayce’s wife. It is unknown why she is not going to be in the spinoff, but her absence will surely be acknowledged and explained during the show somehow.

Our Take On This Update

Thomas Rainwater from Yellowstone

To have actors from Yellowstone recurring their roles would be great for the viewership. Not only will it bring in viewers who loved the show before, but it will make the newer viewers curious about the characters’ previous shows, and want to go back and watch the backstory of the recurring individuals.

Spinoffs always do well when they are able to connect more to the original audience. It is a smart idea to have actors reprising their roles, and bring in familiar faces. Bringing back actors that were part of the original show will connect Yellowstone to Y: Marshals so that the fans won’t feel like it’s a different show entirely, and still enjoy it the way that they used to.
