Warning: Spoilers ahead for season 7 of “The Rookie!”
“The Rookie” follows John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), the LAPD’s oldest rookie, as he works alongside a team of fellow recruits and seasoned officers.
During the Tuesday, Feb. 4, episode of the ABC drama, Officer Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) was prepared to cut new rookie Seth Ridley (Patrick Keleher) from the training program after learning that he’s been lying about personal tragedies to justify his mistakes.
But when Seth reveals that he has cancer —and Lieutenant Wade Grey (Richard T. Jones) announces that he has the full support of the entire team — Lucy is forced to keep Seth around.
During an interview with ScreenRant published earlier this week, O’Neil shared whether she thinks Lucy believes Seth’s cancer story.“I don’t think she bought it,” the actress said before explaining why Lucy couldn’t call Seth out on the spot. “How could anyone, let alone Lucy, say, ‘I don’t believe that guy has cancer.’ I think her internal pride and orientation and social sensitivity prevents her from taking it to that nth degree, from saying that. … I don’t think she believes him, but I don’t think she would dare say that out loud. She’s in an impossible spot. She’s stuck.”
Lucy previously told Sergeant Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), who also happens to be her ex, her concerns about Seth. The pair split during season 6, but they’ve been warming back up to each other in recent episodes. The Tuesday, Feb. 11, episode of “The Rookie” takes place on Valentine’s Day, so is love in the air for Chenford?
“I think [Lucy] is at a place of accepting where they’re at and OK to be with each other at work,” O’Neil told ScreenRant, noting that Lucy has “had a thaw” since the events of season 6.
However, Lucy is still caught off guard by the idea of Tim bringing a date to an upcoming team gala. (The Valentine’s Day episode is titled “The Gala.”)
“I think that kind of surprises her, and she says, ‘What do you mean? What do you mean you’re taking someone to the gala?’” O’Neil said.
