Back on the Force! Blue Bloods Confirms Spinoff Around

Blue Bloods fans aren’t done with the Reagan family just yet! Deadline announced on February 18, 2025, that a Blue Bloods spinoff — titled Boston Blue — is in the works at CBS. The series will center around Detective Danny Reagan (played by Donnie Wahlberg), as he moves from New York to Boston to take a position with the Boston Police Department, where he’s paired with Detective Lena Peters. Lena, much like the Reagans, is the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.

According to Deadline, Boston Blue wasn’t originally conceived as a Blue Bloods spinoff. Instead, the series started as a pitch by showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis as a drama that followers a family of police officers in Boston whose eldest daughter is partnered with a new transfer from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Though CBS ordered a script based on the pitch and the idea was well received by both the network and studio, executives, in the end, saw Boston Blue as an opportunity to expand the Blue Bloods universe. Given that Wahlberg is a Boston native, CBS viewed Danny as the best fit to lead the spinoff. (Another spinoff idea explored revolved around Danny moving to Texas.)

Boston Blue is set to premiere in the 2025-2026 season. Of course, Boston Blue isn’t the only spinoff CBS has in the works. The network is also in production on two Fire Country spinoffs (Sheriff Country and Fire Country: Surfside), one FBI spinoff (FBI: CIA), one Equalizer spinoff and one Neighborhood spinoff.

While there’s been no confirmation around which other Blue Bloods stars will appear in Boston Blue, it’s assumed that Marisa Ramirez — who played Detective Maria Baez, Danny’s partner with whom he went on his first date in the Blue Bloods series finale — is the most likely cast member to make a cameo.

Wahlberg, who played Danny on Blue Bloods from Seasons 1 to 9, previously hinted his time on Blue Bloods wasn’t over in his Instagram tribute to the series ahead of its finale. “Only one #BlueBloods Friday left. Hard to believe we’ve come to the finale, but then it’s hard to believe that we were fortunate enough to be part of something so special for the last fourteen years! Lots of emotion swirling, as I’m sure they are for all of you loyal fans and followers of this show. I say farewell (for now) with no regrets — only gratitude! Let’s celebrate the journey together, one last time, this Friday. 💙❤️,” he wrote at the time.

He also confirmed to Closer in December 2024 that a spinoff was being “discussed.” “I’m sure it’s been discussed in multiple formats and multiple areas with multiple people,” he said at the time. “But you know whatever’s going to happen with the spinoff is going to have to be done thoughtfully and carefully. That’s quite a legacy to live up to after Blue Bloods. And if the show doesn’t carry on some of those magical elements of Blue Bloods, then I think it would be a disservice to the show. So, it’s really just it’s being talked about.”
