Chicago Med‘s Luke Mitchell is a dad! The One Chicago star, who has played Dr. Mitch Ripley on Chicago Med since Season 9, announced in an Instagram post on February 20 that he and his wife, Rebecca Breeds, have welcomed their first child.
“Welcome to the world little man. Thanks for choosing us. We love you beyond words 🙏❤️✨,” Mitchell captioned an Instagram post of his son’s head. The post also included pictures of his newborn’s tiny fingers and feet.
Breeds — an actress who met Mitchell while working on the Australian soap opera Home and Away — announced her pregnancy in an Instagram post in November 2024. “VERY excited to share baby Mitchell and @kangarooislandmovie coming sooooooooon! Thanks @adlfilmfest for having us and everyone who came to support us. 🙏🤍” she captioned a photo of her with a visible baby bump at the Adelaide Film Festival. Mitchell, for his part, commented several heart face emojis. His Chicago Med co-star, Jessy Schram — who plays Ripley’s love interest, Dr. Hannah Asher — also commented clapping hands and heart eyes emojis.
Mitchell and Breeds — who played Romeo Smith and Ruby Buckton, respectively, on Home and Away — announced their engagement in 2012. They married in 2013. In an interview with New Idea in 2012, Mitchell called proposing to Breeds as “one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in my life.”
“I had the element of surprise; I didn’t tell anyone what I was planning, not a soul, not even my parents. But pretending there was nothing special on my mind for three months before I actually asked her to marry me — that was the best acting I’ve ever done!” he said.
Mitchell’s baby news also comes amid speculation that he — and Ripley — are leaving Chicago Med. In the One Chicago show’s most recent episode — Season 10, Episode 13, “Take a Look in the Mirror” — Chief Sharon Goodwin suspends Ripley without pay after the wife of one of Ripley’s patients, who Ripley was responsible for injuring and almost killing, threatens to sue him and Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Goodwin also informs Ripley that she’s recommending the hospital’s board to terminate his employment as the episode ends on a cliffhanger as to whether Ripley will actually leave Gaffney and Chicago Med.
