Blue Bloods Offshoot in the Works With Fan Favorite Character in New Location

Good news has been revealed for fans of Blue Bloods after this hit police drama series recently ended its run. A new series set in the same universe is now in the works with one of the original show’s fan favorite stars taking center stage.

Per Deadline, Donnie Wahlberg will return as Danny Reagan in a new series set in the Blue Bloods universe. Currently titled Boston Blue, the offshoot has already been given a straight-to-series order by CBS. In the offshoot, written by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis (S.W.A.T.), Wahlberg’s Reagan “takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”

Boston Blue will be executive produced by showrunners Sonnier and Margolis alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed of Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Wahlberg is also serving as an executive producer. CBS Studios is producing in association with JBTV.

Boston Blue Wasn’t Originally Planned as a Blue Bloods Offshoot

The show was not originally conceived as a Blue Bloods offshoot. Created by Sonnier and Margolis, it was first pitched to the network as a cop drama that followed a family of police officers in Boston whose eldest daughter gets partnered with a new transfer from the LAPD. A script was ordered, and the result was well received. As Wahlberg is from Boston, the idea came into the mix to revise the story as a Blue Bloods universe series with Danny Reagan as a main character. Once Wahlberg agreed to star and executive produce, the network felt confident enough in the project to move ahead with the series order.

There had been some rumors and rumblings about a possible connected series getting made for Blue Bloods. Per the new report, one possible idea would have seen Wahlberg’s Danny moving to Texas. The news follows the original series ending a run after 14 seasons in December, though it still remains popular with fans. Wahlberg previously spoke about how emotional it was to film the final episode, given how close he had gotten to become with the show’s cast and crew.

“We were all walking this real delicate tightrope during the finale, knowing that it was the last episode and feeling very emotional each day,” he told Entertainment Weekly in an interview. “If it was my last day with Marisa Ramirez on set, and we know it is, there’s going to be a whole wave of emotion surrounding that. If it’s our last day filming outside in the streets of New York, there’s processing that, right?”

Boston Blue is expected to debut during the 2025-26 broadcast television season on CBS, but a premiere date has not yet been officially announced at this time.
