Charmaine Roberts has been a lightning rod for controversy in Virgin River. For six seasons, she has made life difficult for Jack, Mel, and seemingly everyone else in town. But while many fans are eager to see her exit, Lauren Hammersley’s portrayal of Charmaine has been layered and complex—suggesting that there’s still room for growth and redemption.
Hammersley’s comment, “Could you please drown her?”, reflects the ongoing criticism her character receives. Many fans feel that Charmaine has overstayed her welcome, especially after her deception about her pregnancy. However, is it really fair to write her off completely? Or does she still have a chance to turn things around?
Season 6 left Charmaine at a crossroads. She’s been abandoned by Todd, burdened with two newborns, and left to face the consequences of her actions. This could be the perfect opportunity for the writers to give Charmaine a redemptive storyline. Perhaps she finds strength as a single mother, or maybe she finally acknowledges her mistakes and seeks forgiveness from those she has wronged.
Virgin River is a show about second chances and healing. While Charmaine has made significant missteps, it would be refreshing to see her evolve rather than simply fade away. If Season 7 is indeed her last, why not let her go out on a high note?
