Hit series Yellowstone may have finally come to an end but its world and stories are far from over as one of the first spin-offs finally comes to Netflix.
The streaming platform already boasts four out of the five seasons of the original mega-hit but now it has increased its offering even further. Originally a Paramount+ exclusive, the streamer has now included 1883 as part of its ever changing collection. Writer, actor and showrunner Taylor Sheridan has grown his brainchild into a behemoth of multiple stories, all along a timeline that extends across generations of characters and some impressive cast lists.
However with the number of spin-offs, sequels and prequels still growing, some fans may wonder if there was ever supposed to be a follow up to the first season of 1883, which was first aired in 2021. Considering the first official spin-off, the show offers a kind of an origin story for the wider Yellowstone universe.
The series follows the post–Civil War generation of the Dutton family as they leave Tennessee, journey to Fort Worth, Texas, and join a wagon train undertaking the arduous journey west to Oregon, before settling in Montana to establish what will eventually become the Yellowstone Ranch. Its cast is lead by Sam Elliott, known for A Star Is Born and Hulk and he is joined by real life husband and wife Tim McGraw and Faith Hill who played this early generation of the Duttons.
1883 was never actually canceled. It was always intended to be a limited series consisting of a singular season. Slash Film reports that Sheridan was only given a number of months to write and film the entire series so that Paramount could have it ready for the launch of their own streaming platform. No surprise then, that he kept the story contained.
Confusion among viewers is expected as in February 2022, Paramount did actually announce that “additional episodes” will follow the first season of the show. However, it was later revealed that his decision was reversed. Sheridan considers 1883 to be “a 10-hour movie with an ending”.
That doesn’t stop fans from demanding more episodes. Sharing their praise for the show, one posted online: “I LOVE THIS SHOW! Wish there were more seasons!” While another added: “Fantastic! Brilliantly put together with great acting and a storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Best series I’ve watched for a long time.”
While viewers will have to make do with the single season of 1883 to binge on Netflix, it’s by far the end for the Yellowstone universe. More spin-offs are on the way, with the second season of 1923 currently airing, which will be followed by a sequel series titled 1944.
There will also be 6666, a spinoff focused around the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. More intriguingly are the reports of a show that could be a direct sequel to Yellowstone, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, titled The Madison.
