Yerin Ha on the Challenges of Playing Sophie Beckett: ‘It’s Unlike Anything I’ve Ever Done Before’

Stepping into the world of Bridgerton is no small feat, and for Yerin Ha, playing Sophie Beckett has been both thrilling and challenging. In a recent interview, the actress opened up about the demands of the role, revealing that bringing Sophie to life required her to push herself in ways she never had before.

Becoming Sophie: The Emotional & Physical Challenges

Unlike the high-society debutantes that typically grace the Bridgerton ballroom, Sophie Beckett is a servant, a young woman who has suffered cruelty and hardship at the hands of her stepmother. Yerin Ha admitted that portraying Sophie’s struggles—from her quiet resilience to the emotional toll of her circumstances—was one of the most demanding aspects of the role.

“Playing Sophie has been unlike anything I’ve ever done before,” Ha confessed. “She’s incredibly strong, but there’s also so much vulnerability beneath the surface. It’s been a challenge balancing those emotions while also navigating the grand world of Bridgerton.”

But the emotional weight of the role wasn’t the only challenge. Ha also revealed that the physical demands of the show—especially the elaborate ballroom scenes—were unlike anything she had encountered in previous projects.

Dancing, Corsets, and Mastering the Bridgerton Elegance

Like every Bridgerton newcomer, Ha had to undergo extensive dance training to prepare for Sophie’s moments in the spotlight. Learning the elegant waltzes and intricate choreography required for the ball scenes was a rigorous process, made even more demanding by the period-accurate corsets and gowns.

“There were moments where I’d be in a dance rehearsal for hours, and then I’d have to immediately jump into an emotional scene. It’s exhausting, but it’s also what makes Bridgerton so special,” Ha shared.

Despite the challenges, Ha expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, noting that playing Sophie has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
