House Of The Dragon May Have Explained What Drogon Really Did With Daenerys’ Body After Game Of Thrones

After Game of Thrones, there’s one big question still remaining about Daenerys Targaryen: what exactly did Drogon do with her body? Game of Thrones‘ ending saw the dragon flying East after his mother’s death at the hands of Jon Snow, and he had Dany’s dead body with him. That, somewhat inevitably, led to theories as to what his plan was, with speculation that Daenerys was taken to Kinvara, a Red Priestess, to be resurrected. However, House of the Dragon might’ve revealed the truth of the matter.

Although it’s set almost two centuries before Game of Thrones, Daenerys appeared in House of the Dragon as part of a vision of Daemon Targaryen, who was seeing the future of his house. She was also referenced at the very beginning, as a marker for its timeline. Meanwhile, several mentions of the Prince That Was Promised have also kept memories of Dany very much alive, but could she really come back to life? Based on what we’ve seen in House of the Dragon, the answer is likely “no.”

House Of The Dragon Revealed Targaryen Funeral Customs

The Prequel Showed It On-Screen With Aemma Arryn

In House of the Dragon season 1, episode 1, we see the death of Aemma Arryn, and then also get to witness her funeral. This is the most telling part, as it clues us in to Targaryen (and likely more widely Valyrian) customs regarding death, as her body is burned by Rhaenyra Targaryen’s dragon, Syrax.

Targaryens being cremated, and their funeral pyres being lit by dragons (when there are some, at least), makes a lot of sense, with their ashes then generally interred in the Great Sept of Baelor. They consider themselves like dragons and their house words are “fire and blood,” and so it’s the most fitting fate for them, rather than burials that are more common throughout the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.

Drogon Burning Daenerys’ Body Is The Best Explanation For What Happened To Her

It’s Much Better Than Her Being Resurrected In Game Of Thrones

While the theory of Daenerys being resurrected by Kinvara is admittedly plausible, given we’ve seen multiple characters come back from the dead thanks to the Lord of Light in both Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire, it’s not one I’m a fan of. I don’t really see a great deal of narrative value, nor what her story would be after that point, and it doesn’t improve anything from season 9.

On the flip side, confirmation that Drogon burned Daenerys’ body would be a fitting end note for her arc. This would be a great way of honoring her Targaryen heritage, especially as she was the last true dragon remaining (since Jon Snow was always more of a Stark). That lineage, and reclaiming her birthright, was a core part of her story, and it’d be neat to have that reflected at the very end.

Daenerys’ story truly started when she emerged from Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre with three baby dragons, and so there’s a real sense of things coming full circle if it ends with her being burned by one of those same dragons on her own funeral pyre.

Beyond that, it would also be a tribute to another part of her arc. Daenerys’ story truly started when she emerged from Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre with three baby dragons, and so there’s a real sense of things coming full circle if it ends with her being burned by one of those same dragons on her own funeral pyre. It’s a choice that would actually fit the lore and, if Game of Thrones season 9 ever happened, ensure any talk of Dany returning was completely ruled out.

Drogon Burning Daenerys Can Undo A Silly Game Of Thrones Book Change

Game Of Thrones Made Daenerys Very Different To Other Targaryens

Of course, there’s one potential problem with Drogon following the typical Valyrian customs: Daenerys is fireproof in Game of ThronesNot only did she emerge from Drogo’s funeral pyre completely unscathed, but was then shown to be fully immune to fire in season 6 too, when she burned the other khals. This was a change to the A Song of Ice and Fire books, where Drogo’s pyre was a one-off magical event, and Dany actually had her hair burned off during it.

That means, in the world of Game of Thrones, Daenerys is truly unlike any other Targaryen in history, such as those in House of the Dragon. Does that still apply when she’s dead? The rules are, obviously, quite unclear, but I’d like them to do it as a slight walking back of that change, and her being dead is enough of a loophole to get around it. Having some kind of closure about what happened to her would be great – again, especially if season 9 was made, and to help shut down the resurrection theory – and make her story feel even more complete.
