With CBS’ FBI Losing Both Spinoffs in 2025, I’m Reflecting on What Went Wrong with NBC’s Failed One Chicago Show

Five episodes after he mysteriously went missing on Tracker, the CBS show finally revealed Bobby’s whereabouts and the answer comes with a tragic story for the beloved hacker.

When does Bobby come back to Tracker?

As of writing, CBS hasn’t confirmed when Bobby will return to Tracker, however, he is set to come back by the end of Season 2, based on a clip from the midseason trailer, which showed that Bobby hadn’t left the show. The trailer included a scene of Bobby inside his office helping protagonist Colter with a new case.

After Bobby first went missing in Season 2, Episode 10, “Nightingale,” Tracker finally explained where he was in Season 2, Episode 15, “The Grey Goose,” in which Colter asked Randy – Bobby’s cousin who stepped in for him as Colter’s new tech expert – if he had heard from Bobby. “You know how he gets. He doesn’t like to talk about personal stuff,” Randy said before the show tragically confirmed that Bobby went on leave to attend a loved one’s funeral.

Colter then mentioned that he heard Bobby was going to his “friend’s funeral,” to which Randy responded, “I know that is hitting him hard. They were like brothers.” Colter then explained hat, while he had “sent [Bobby] a few texts,” he understood why he hadn’t “heard anything back” from the hacker as he “was just taking some time” for himself.

“He will get back to it – and if he doesn’t then I will make sure he does,” Randy continued. “No way out but through.” The scene was the first update Tracker gave on Bobby’s whereabouts since Randy revealed in “Nightingale” that Bobby had to take a leave of absence due to “family” issues. This disappearance sparked concern he was leaving the show after original cast member Robin Weigert, who Teddi Bruin, mysteriously left after Season 1.

Teddi was written out in the Season 2 premiere, with her wife, Velma, explaining that the two needed some distance in their relationship. Reenie, played by Fiona Rene, replaced Teddi as one of Colter’s handlers. “[Teddi] is going to be there for a while. She is helping her mom get sorted. I was getting in the way you might say and it really wasn’t good,” Velma said in the Season 2 premiere. “So I came back. Don’t you worry because I am keeping busy.”

Fiona Rene, who plays Reenie, also seemingly confirmed Bobby’s return to the show in an interview with TV Insider in March 2025 in which she teased an upcoming scene between Bobby and Randy. “I mean, can we just talk about Randy for a second? I love Chris Lee with everything in my body,” she said. “He’s been such a wonderful addition to the Bobby dynamic, and I am very excited to see them together.”

As for why Bobby has been missing in Season 2, it’s not uncommon for primetime actors to miss a few episodes to save on costs.Deadline reported in May 2024 that series regulars on CBS’ other procedural shows, FBI and FBI: Most Wanted, had their minimum guaranteed episodes cut by two episodes to save on expenses. The news came a week after Deadline also reported that veteran cast members on Grey’s Anatomy also had their guaranteed episode counts slashed by three to four in a cost-saving measure.
