Chicago Fire Season 13 Is Finally Bringing Back Classic Kelly Severide

Although there were concerns that Taylor Kinney’s time on *Chicago Fire* was coming to an end, Kelly Severide’s

subtle return to his prime form in season 13 suggests otherwise. Kinney has starred as Severide since the very

beginning of the NBC procedural drama. As a lieutenant at Firehouse 51 and the officer in charge of Squad 3, Severide has always been an important character in the series. So, when he began to lose his classic self in recent *Chicago Fire* seasons, the One Chicago TV show started to go downhill; thus, Severide’s role in season 13 is particularly exciting.

As of season 13, Kinney is one of the few original cast members remaining. He is joined by David Eigenberg as Christopher Herrmann, Christian Stolte as Randall “Mouch” McHolland, and Joe Miñoso as Joe Cruz. While there have been many great additions to the cast over the years, maintaining a sense of nostalgia with original characters has become increasingly vital, especially after Eamonn Walker’s exit ahead of season 13. By bringing back the classic version of Severide, the procedural drama is setting itself up for success.

Hints of classic Kelly Severide have been noted in season 13, especially given that he was relatively absent in recent seasons. Many believed Taylor Kinney was leaving *Chicago Fire* after the actor’s absence during multiple episodes in seasons 11 and 12. Kinney had to step away toward the end of season 11 to deal with a personal matter and was absent from a few episodes of season 12. However, Kinney has thankfully returned as Severide in season 13. After the first five episodes, it’s abundantly clear that the character is stepping back into his classic, passionate role within the procedural drama. While he had been mellow in previous seasons, that trend is beginning to change.

Since the season 13 premiere, Severide has been actively involved in various storylines, both personal and work-related. He faced a dilemma between taking Stella’s side or Jack Damon’s—Severide’s half-brother—when Damon disobeyed Stella’s orders, a conflict that unfolded over several episodes. Additionally, Severide has investigated a couple of mysterious fires, collaborating with Stella in episode 5. The tension between Severide and Chief Pascal, which was teased in episode 1, is set to escalate in episode 6 over a significant case.

The return of classic Kelly Severide is promising for the future of *Chicago Fire*. As an integral member of the Firehouse 51 team, his classic character is essential for the show’s thriving narrative, especially after recent cast exits. The series just isn’t the same without Severide’s determination and excellent instincts. By resuming his classic role in season 13, Severide’s character arc can develop the space it needs to grow. His stories over the past couple of seasons have left much to be desired, but with Severide more involved this season, he has the opportunity to remind viewers why he is a pivotal part of the NBC series.
