“The Rookie Delivers a Standout Scene for This Unexpected Pairing”

The Rookie’s seventh season has seen the introduction of two very different rookies: Miles Penn (Deric Augustine) and Seth Ridley (Patrick Keleher). Seth’s arc was focused on him gradually being exposed as a pathological liar, before then being fired from the LAPD. Meanwhile, Miles’ arc has been about him adjusting to this new stage in his life, after things didn’t end up going the way that he had expected. So far, some of these storylines have included moving into Smitty’s (Brent Huff) lot of trailers and, most recently, selling his old championship ring to pay his ex-fiancée’s father back.

Seth’s storyline seems to be over, but Miles’ is far from it, as his arc moves forward in The Rookie’s latest episode. After a season of dealing with losses, including that of a home and of his past relationship, Miles is faced with the life that he could have had, when he runs into his former teammate, A.J. Knox (Justin Cornwell). A.J. is now a successful professional football player living in a fancy mansion, and this causes Miles to rethink his own professional choices, ultimately bringing him closer to his T.O. and mentor, Tim Bradford (Eric Winter).

In ‘The Rookie’s Latest Episode, Miles Questions His Choices

While out on the job, Miles runs into A.J., who invites him to a party at his house that night. When Miles shows up, the guard at the door is hesitant to let him in, until A.J.’s childhood best friend, personal trainer, and chief of staff, Sean Larson (Chibuikem Uche), gives him the go-ahead. A.J. greets Miles and invites him to spend the night in one of his spare rooms, then brings Miles with him to go do an interview. A.J. tries to give Miles some of the attention during the interview, but this just leaves Miles feeling self-conscious and embarrassed. Miles then catches Sean stealing jewelry from A.J., and he confronts him. Later, Miles overhears Sean trying to push back a plan due to “a complicating factor.”

When Miles tells A.J. about the jewelry the next morning, though, A.J. reveals that he is already aware, and he lets Sean steal from him. Touched by Miles’ concern, A.J. offers Miles a job as head of his security. It’s a dream job with $300,000 a year and an actual place to live. Miles actually considers it, especially after Sean drugs A.J. smoothie in an attempt to injure him and win his bet that A.J. wouldn’t be able to play this season. Miles saves the day, though, leaving A.J. hopeful that he will stick around as his head of security.

Tim and Miles Have Their Best Moment Yet in ‘The Rookie’ Season 7

Back at the precinct, Miles tells Tim about the job offer, and that he’s thinking of accepting it because of the stability and perks that come with it. Tim argues against it, though, telling Miles that if he takes the job, his dream life will be just in reach, but not his. Then, in the best moment for these two yet, Tim tells Miles that he is good at his job, and encourages him to keep building his own life. This perfectly exemplifies what makes Tim a great T.O.: while he can certainly be tough, he cares a lot, and he pushes his rookies to be better.

Sure enough, Miles turns down the job. Miles and Tim even get season tickets out of it from A.J., and Tim then expresses his support for Miles’ decision. It’s a lovely ending to the episode, showing the strong working relationship between Tim and Miles, and hinting at an eventual friendship. Especially after everything Tim went through last season and the work that he’s put in to better himself, it’s nice to see him have a win as a T.O., and to see him support Miles.
