Created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, Chicago Fire premiered in 2012. It follows the lives of firefighters at the fictional Firehouse 51, and Sardarov’s character was one of the original first responders. It was a source of comedic relief in every season of Chicago Fire, including a subplot where he dated the half-sister of Taylor Kinney’s character Kelly Severide. Otis’ death shook up the show and reminded viewers that, despite many of the main cast continually emerging alive after cliffhangers, the perils facing the firefighters were deadly.
Updated by Alex Roush on September 17, 2024: With the recent cast departures in Chicago Fire’s Season 12, fans wonder what the series’ future will look like. However, this is far from the first time a One Chicago series has lost an integral character. Otis’ exit from the series several years ago shows that the series can survive losing important cast members. This article has been updated to include new information, enhance the reader experience, and adhere to CBR’s current formatting guidelines.
How Did Otis Die in Chicago Fire?
Otis Dies After a Massive Cliffhanger at the End of Chicago Fire Season 7

His team rescued him and rushed him to the hospital, where he died by the side of his best friend and roommate, Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso), after telling him in Russian, “Brother, I will be with you, always.” It wouldn’t be until three months later that Cruz learned the translation of Otis’ last words. His death hung heavily over the team at Firehouse 51, and while mourning their fallen teammate, the firefighters erected a memorial to Otis, ensuring his impact would never be forgotten.
Why Yuri Sardarov Left Chicago Fire
Otis’s Death Was a Decision Made by the Writers, Not Yuri Sardarov
Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri) was originally slated for the chopping block. However, the character was too new to the series, and Haas said the emotional toll of the death would only be felt if it was a longtime cast member. “For it to be a real surprise, you need it to be a core cast member. We thought that Yuri affects everyone in the house as well as fans,” Haas told TV Insider. “I had seen a memorial at an LA firehouse, and I thought that’s something we’ve never done before. I was thinking how could he be remembered, so I had the memorial as the ending in my mind and worked backward from that.“
Losing Otis was tough for fans, especially after everything he’d endured in previous seasons. His demise had a lasting impact on Chicago Fire, especially for his best friend Cruz, who’d go on to name his child Otis. Most significantly, however, Otis’s death challenged the writers to bring a realistic sense of danger back to the series.
What Else Has Yuri Sardarov Been In?
Yuri Sardarov’s Career Since Chicago Fire Has Mainly Been in Television
Besides playing one of the best characters in the One Chicago franchise, Yuri Sardarov has starred in his fair share of recognizable films and television series. The actor’s work in film has been relatively limited, playing supporting roles in various lesser-known movies. However, Sardarov has appeared in multiple recognizable movies, including The Ides of March, a 2011 political drama that made considerable ripples at the Academy Awards. The Chicago Fire star plays a small role in the film. Nevertheless, he has the distinct honor of working alongside A-list actors like George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Paul Giamatti. The following year, Sardarov appeared in Argo alongside Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, and Alan Arkin.

Chicago Fire is a beloved drama that has continued to have fans reeled in even when some storylines are so strange it angers the audience.
Several Major Characters Exited Chicago Fire in Season 12
The Series’ Most Recent Season Saw Multiple Cast Exits
The first cast member to depart during Chicago Fire’s Season 12 was Alberto Rosende, who appears in just the preliminary episode of the season, “Barely Gone.” His character, Blake Gallo, decides to move to Michigan to be with his newly discovered family and gets a new job working for a fire department in Detroit. The episode does, however, bring back another beloved character. Kelly Severide (played by Taylor Kinney), who was absent for much of Season 11, makes a triumphant return in Season 12’s first episode and stays as a recurring character of the season.
Kara Killmer makes her final appearance as Sylvie Brett in Chicago Fire’s Season 12, Episode 6, “Port in the Storm.” Her story ends positively, with the beloved newlywed paramedic moving to Portland, Oregon along with her husband Matt Casey after a heartwarming wedding ceremony. The episode’s title alludes to Matt’s line in his wedding vows, “You are the port in my storm.” Despite Sylvie’s departure from the series, Killmer has been vocal about her willingness to return to the One Chicago franchise if given the opportunity.
Losing beloved characters can be painful for many fans of the One Chicago franchise, who still mourn losses from early in the series. However, character deaths allow Chicago Fire to raise its stakes, showing that any character could suffer a tragic end under the wrong circumstances. Season 13 of Chicago Fire will premiere on September 25, 2024, with new episodes airing Wednesdays at 9/8c.
