10 Game of Thrones Actors Who Appear In Star Wars

Five years after its hotly controversial finale, Game of Thrones remains one of the most popular television series of all time. Featuring an epic battle for the Iron Throne of Westeros, the HBO series based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire was known for introducing iconic characters that audiences grew to love throughout eight seasons.

The popularity of Game of Thrones being what it is, many actors and actresses from the beloved series have gone on to enjoy successful careers outside of the series. Many have joined major franchises in the years since, with many showing up in a galaxy far, far away for a surprise appearance in the Star Wars universe.

10. Emilia Clarke Is Daenerys Targaryen And Qi’ra

Emilia Clarke shot to superstardom for her portrayal of Queen Daenerys I Targaryen, the rightful ruler of Westeros. Throughout the series, Daenerys works to get back to her family’s kingdom after her father, King Aerys II, was killed in Robert’s Rebellion. Building up an army on the other side of the Narrow Sea, Daenerys becomes one of the most powerful rulers in the history of the world, eventually leading her soldiers–and her dragons–into the Seven Kingdoms.

  • Emilia Clarke is also known for playing G’iah in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Secret Invasion.

Just one year before Game of Thrones ended, Clarke joined the Star Wars franchise. She appeared as Qi’ra, Han Solo’s love interest in Solo: A Star Wars Story. After separating from Han, Qi’ra went on to become a leading member of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate, secretly working for the former Sith apprentice Darth Maul. Although Qi’ra was presumably meant to appear in further projects, Solo‘s box office disappointment canceled any plans for her character’s future.

9. Richard E. Grant Is Izembaro And Admiral Pryde

Richard E. Grant as Admiral Enric Pryde in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Richard E. Grant may be better known for other roles, but he did make a short appearance in Game of Thrones as Izembaro. Grant’s character is the leader of a mummer’s group that appears in Season 6, wherein his troop depicts a comedic and bawdy account of the War of the Five Kings.

  • Richard E. Grant also appears in the first season of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Loki as Classic Loki.

Grant also appeared in 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, the final installment of the Sequel Trilogy. In the film, the British character actor plays Admiral Enric Pryde, a First Order officer who frequently clashes with General Hux. It is eventually revealed that Pryde secretly works for the resurrected Emperor Palpatine, joining the Final Order during the Battle of Exegol, in which he is killed when his ship is blown up by Resistance forces.

8. Julian Glover Is Maester Pycelle And General Veers

In Game of Thrones, Julian Glover plays Grand Maester Pycelle, a member of Robert I Baratheon’s Small Council who is more loyal to the Lannisters than he is to the king. Pycelle is weasely and self-indulgent, fooling the rest of the court into thinking that he is a weak old man in hopes that they will underestimate him. This ruse only works on some people, however, and certain others make enemies of Pycelle when they see through his act.

  • Julian Glover is also known for playing the villainous Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

Though Star Wars fans may not recognize Glover through Pycelle’s wispy white beard, the actor also played an important role in The Empire Strikes Back. In the highly acclaimed sequel to the original Star Wars, Glover plays General Maximilian Veers, an Imperial officer who leads the attack on the Rebel base during the Battle of Hoth. It is Veers who approaches the massive AT-AT, bringing the Rebel forces to ruin during the conflict.

7. Pedro Pascal Is Oberyn Martell And Din Djarin

Pedro Pascal shook up the cast of Game of Thrones when he finally joined the series in its fourth season. Pascal plays Oberyn Martell, the Prince of Dorne who has an axe to grind with the Lannisters for the murder of his sister, niece, and nephew. Unfortunately, when Oberyn finally gets his revenge, he lets his guard down and is quickly dispatched by the Mountain.

  • Pedro Pascal is known for many other popular roles, including that of Joel Miller in Max’s adaptation of The Last of Us.

Years after playing Oberyn Martell, Pedro Pascal became a bonafide star thanks to roles in major franchises. This included the lead role in the first Star Wars Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, in which he plays the bounty hunter Din Djarin. Though masked for much of the series, Pascal has become closely associated with this popular character, who will return in his upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will be helmed by Jon Favreau.

6. Gwendoline Christie Is Brienne Of Tarth And Captain Phasma

Gwendoline Christie made a name for herself playing Lady Brienne of Tarth, one of the strongest fighters in Game of Thrones. Loyal and true, Brienne was one of the few characters who kept her honor intact through the various conflicts of the series, leading Ser Jamie Lannister to knight her in the final season as they prepared for the final battle with the Night King.

  • Gwendoline Christie also played Larissa Weems in the first season of Netflix’s hit series Wednesday.

Christie also appears in two installments of the Star Wars sequel trilogy as the First Order officer Captain Phasma. Phasma leads the First Order stormtroopers in The Force Awakens until her apparent death in the destruction of Starkiller Base. Her face is never seen during the film, remaining hidden behind a chrome stormtrooper helmet. Phasma is revealed to have survived in The Last Jedi, wherein she battles with Finn, who finally kills her after breaking her helmet, revealing part of her face for the first time.

5. Indira Varma Is Ellaria Sand And Tala Durith

Indira Varma plays a major role in the later seasons of Game of Thrones. She plays Ellaria Sand, a bastard from Dorne who climbed the ranks of society to become a companion to the prince. She and her daughters later join Daenerys Targaryen in her war against the Lannisters, though things go particularly poorly for this faction of the queen’s army.

  • Indira Varma will voice the Bride of Frankenstein in the upcoming DCU animated series Creature Commandos.

More recently, Varma appeared in the Disney+ limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi, which centers around Ewan McGregor’s titular Jedi during his exile on Tatooine. Varma plays Tala Durith, an Imperial officer who came to see the tyranny of the Empire, betraying the oppressive regime and sacrificing her life for the Rebel cause.

The character first appears in Season 4, where he is played by Struan Roger, but is recast in Season 6, with Max von Sydow portraying the character in all of his following appearances.

  • Max von Sydow is also known for playing Lankester Merrin in The Exorcist.

Max von Sydow has a similarly small role in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The legendary actor appears in the opening of the film, playing Lor San Tekka, a man whom Kylo Ren interrogates on Jakku. Tekka is killed by the First Order, but not before giving Poe Dameron the map to Luke Skywalker.

She appears in the sixth season of the series, where she is introduced as a member of the Dosh Khaleen, which presides over the Dothraki holy city of Vaes Dothrak. Daenerys Targaryen liberates Ornela from this oppressive group and she is never seen again, a rarity in the Game of Thrones universe.

  • Hannah John-Kamen also plays Ava Starr, a.k.a. Ghost, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in Ant-Man and the Wasp and the upcoming Thunderbolts*.

Hannah John-Kamen has a minor cameo in The Force Awakens, playing an unnamed First Order officer stationed on Starkiller Base. Although the character only appears in one scene, it can be concluded that she perished in the destruction of the base at the end of the film.

2. Dean-Charles Chapman Is Tommen Baratheon And Master Torbin

Dean-Charles Chapman originally only had a minor role in Game of Thrones, playing the young Martyn Lannister, who is murdered by Lord Rickard Karstark after being taken captive during the War of the Five Kings. However, Chapman surprisingly returned the next season, this time playing Tommen Baratheon, who had previously been portrayed by Callum Wharry.

  • Dean-Charles Chapman also played Lance Corporal Blake in 1917.

Chapman recently appeared in the new Star Wars Disney+ series The Acolyte as the Jedi Master Torbin. Torbin was the Padawan learner of Master Indara and was involved in the incident that destroyed Mother Aniseya’s coven of Force witches. He later takes the Barash Vow, which he maintains until he is tracked down and killed by one of Aniseya’s daughters, Mae.

Henwick has a much smaller role in the Star Wars franchise, portraying Resistance pilot Jessika Pava. The character only appears in live-action during the events of The Force Awakens, during which she participates in the Battle of Starkiller Base. While this marks the only time that Henwick has played the character, Pava appears in multiple other mediums, including the Poe Dameron comic series.
