The Rookie season 7 began on January 7th, 2025, and the past 16 episodes have been funny, moving, and compelling. When season 1 of the procedural premiered in October 2018, it quickly gained a large fan base thanks to the clever characters and the chance to watch Nathan Fillion lead another TV series. Fillion’s main character, John Nolan, decides to become an LAPD officer at 40 years old, and throughout the show’s run so far, he has grown in his career and formed important relationships.

The most recent episode, The Rookie season 7, episode 14, “Mad About Murder,” told a great story about Celina’s Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) attempting to get a podcast deleted and Miles Penn (Deric Augustine) working on training videos for the LAPD. “Documentary filmmakers interview the LAPD on a complicated missing person’s case connected to John.”
The next episode has three fascinating elements: a documentary, a character’s disappearance, and what the case means for Nolan. Since The Rookie is a fast-paced series with great characters, it’s possible to imagine that filming the documentary doesn’t go smoothly, and maybe there is some tension between the main characters. It sounds like Nolan knew the victim, or at least is somewhat connected to them. That personal tie could make it easier for him to solve the mystery and showcase that, once again, his perceptive personality makes him a great fit for his career.
Perhaps The Rookie season 7, episode 15 will also address some of Nolan’s backstory. While NCIS fans learned the details of Leroy Gibbs’s origin story when NCIS: Origins premiered in the fall of 2024, they had questions about his early career years before the prequel. Since The Rookie is about Nolan’s second act, it would be great to find out a bit more about his younger years. Perhaps he knew the missing person before he joined the LAPD.
The Rookie Season 7 Perfectly Blends The Personal And Professional Lives Of John Nolan And His Coworkers
So far, The Rookie season 7 has been a lot of fun to tune into every week. The show has embraced what it does best: ensuring that while the LAPD officers are dealing with interesting cases, a spotlight is on their personal lives.
The best example of this? At the end of The Rookie season 7, episode 13, “Three Billboards,” Bailey and Nolan have decided to stop trying to adopt a child after the messy meeting they had with a social worker. Since she said their lives are too risky for them to be approved, they figure they’ll enjoy their careers and put that idea on hold. Hopefully, the next episodes of The Rookie season 7 will show this problem being solved. It would be terrible if Bailey and Nolan never became parents, and so hopefully there’s a way for them to work this out.
