Tim Allen’s getting a third chance at headlining a sitcom after Home Improvement reboot plans fall through.
Tim Allen is one of Hollywood’s most iconic comedians and resident funny man, who became a big name thanks to his roles in Toy Story and Home Improvement. Home Improvement in particular lasted for eight seasons on ABC in the ‘90s and captured the hearts of many.
Fans of the beloved sitcom Home Improvement were thrilled when Tim Allen hinted at plans for a reunion or revival of the series. However, those hopes have been dashed as such plans are no longer in the works. Despite this setback, Allen’s third opportunity with a sitcom has emerged as his saving grace.
Home Improvement Reboot Will Not Be Happening
In case you didn’t know, Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson portrayed the roles of husband and wife, Timothy “Tim” Taylor and Jillian “Jill” Taylor, respectively, on all eight seasons of Home Improvement. In a 2023 interview with EW, Allen expressed his desire to revive the series and revealed that he had discussed the possibility with his fellow cast members.
However, during a recent appearance on the Back To The Best podcast, Richardson disclosed that she had not been contacted regarding the supposed revival. Unsurprisingly, Richardson expressed confusion over the public comments made by Tim Allen regarding the potential revival of the sitcom.
”It was so weird. I would hear on Twitter or whatever, I’d hear that he was coming out publicly and saying this stuff about everyone was on board to do a Home Improvement reunion, but he never asked me, and he never asked Jonathan [Taylor Thomas], who I talk to. So I called Jonathan one day, and I said, ‘Has he asked you about this? He went, ‘No.’ ‘So why is he saying everyone is on board when he hasn’t talked to you or me?’ I think that’s weird.”
Richardson further elaborated that the leading actor of Home Improvement made a claim about another spinoff, which allegedly involved her character.
”And then, there started being this rumor going around that somebody had a script that was like a Jill script, ‘Jill’s Dream,’ or something like that. And [Allen] was kind of lying to people and telling them that I was on board, and I didn’t know anything about it. So I wrote a big thing on Twitter and said, ‘ I’m not involved in any series with Jill and also never even been asked to do another Home Improvement reunion thing.’ But I wouldn’t want to.”
It is not known why Tim Allen would even make such a claim, but fans have accepted that they will never see a reboot again and that’s likely for the best.
Tim Allen Is Getting His Third Chance At A Sitcom
Tim Allen has been absent from network TV for a few years since the conclusion of his ABC/Fox sitcom Last Man Standing. That being said, ABC has ordered a pilot for a brand-new show called Shifting Gears, where the 70-year-old actor will portray a widow and classic car shop proprietor
While many sitcom stars have had the chance to headline one successful comedy, getting multiple smash hits under their belt is unheard of. While speaking to ET, the former tool man made it clear he is very excited for the role, as it will be his third chance at a major sitcom.
“I am very excited. You know, I tried really hard with Home Improvement, and then Last Man Standing. Maybe three’s a charm! Maybe I can finally make a statement with this. It was a big event for me because I really loved Home Improvement, [so] to do Last Man Standing was a big push, and then I love that family so much. But then ABC said, ‘If you come up with an idea,’ and I said, ‘If I did it, it would be this.’ And we came up with this idea, and we’re getting there.”
It remains to be seen whether Shifting Gears will turn out to be a huge success with Tim Allen leading the charge. Also, Home Improvement is streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
