10 Plot Holes and Puzzling Moments in Tracker Season 2

Tracker is a compelling procedural crime drama that follows skilled survivalist Colter Shaw, who searches for missing persons in exchange for reward money. He has a special set of skills, so to speak, which makes sense based on his upbringing: his father taught him everything he needs to know about living off the grid. He’s also fearless and well-connected, which helps him get the job done.

While Tracker does take some liberties, being a TV show meant to entertain, there are a few things, especially in season two, that don’t make a lot of sense. They have fans scratching their heads and rolling their eyes.

10Colter Has All But Forgotten About His Family Mystery

One of the biggest overarching mysteries in season one of Tracker was the death of Colter’s father, Ashton. Colter was a teenager when he found his father dead at the bottom of a cliff near their home after he had run off not long before. There are hints of a conspiracy, his father believing that someone was out to get him.

The cast of Tracker includes some recognizable faces from other hit shows, each of whom has their role in helping Colter solve each case.

Little hints about the Colter family mystery in Tracker have been dropped from time to time, yet nothing has materialized. Even though there was a promise that Jensen Ackles, who plays Colter’s older brother Russell, would have a larger part in season two, and that fans would see the return of characters like Lizzy, Colter’s family friend who knew things about their father, his sister Dory, and mother Mary as well, they have all been MIA.

9Local Cops Include Him in Dangerous Investigations

Colter has, not surprisingly, been met with pushback by many local police officers when he is hanging around investigating a case in a different town. Sometimes, once he proves that he has great perceptive skills and can be of use, they allow him to help. But in some instances, it’s to unbelievable levels.

In Season 2, Episode 18, “Collision,” for example, the officer not only works closely with Colter but also allows him to go into the house with her officers as they are prepping to capture a potentially dangerous suspect. Most cops would tell Colter, who is effectively a private citizen, to step back. Yet she even looks to him for approval before entering the house, as though he’s leading the investigation, not her. On many other occasions, cops have treated Colter like one of them, which could easily blow back on them if Colter were harmed.

8Colter Is Allowed to Interrogate Suspects

On more than one occasion, including in the aforementioned episode 18 “Collison,” Colter asks officers if he can “take a stab at it” and is permitted into an interrogation room to question a suspect. In that episode, the officer even says that it goes against protocol, but she’ll allow it. She’s basically admitting Colter can do a better job. It’s unlikely this would ever happen, at least not without going through several layers of red tape.

While it’s often suggested that it’s because he’s in a small town with officers who aren’t used to such heinous cases and are maybe more lax with the rules, Colter seems to have all the access and respect of a police officer without actually being one.

7Police Openly Use His Illegal Hacking Sources

In many episodes of this show where someone goes missing, Colter works with the police. When they note that they have put in a request to get something like phone records or to trace a vehicle or credit card, Colter indicates that he doesn’t have time to wait for them, and he makes a phone call to Bobby or Randy. In a matter of minutes, his team of hackers can call up the information that Colter and the police need.

Tracker follows survivalist Colter Shaw as he takes on cases for reward money. With Season 2 on the way, it’s a great time to revisit Season 1.

It’s not believable that every cop Colter works with turns a blind eye to the fact that he’s working with illegal hackers. What’s more, given that the information was obtained through this means, there’s a chance the suspects would not be convicted since illegal means were used to find them or get information. This small but crucial fact, however, is never addressed, despite Colter accessing private information without a warrant and going through proper legal channels.

6Bobby Can Work Miracles

Bobby is a great hacker, as is Randy. But sometimes, the things they accomplish and the speed at which they do it are unbelievable. There’s seemingly nothing Colter needs that Bobby can’t provide. He can instantly pull up car ownership records, for example, or even a full call history on someone’s phone, even when the person is from another state. He can tap into credit cards, bank accounts, building schematics, security cameras, and more.

How Bobby, who disappeared in Tracker Season 2 for a while and was replaced by Randy, is not on the radar of law enforcement, especially with Colter’s work being so public, is puzzling. Bobby even openly and brazenly helps Colter with cases while police are present and know what’s happening, yet they go along with it.

5He Never Has to Stay For Questioning

Once Colter is done with a case, many of which end with dead bodies, he simply visits the person who hired him, gets his check, and moves on to the next job. It doesn’t appear as though he ever sticks around for questioning, even though he was right in the thick of what happened, and is often responsible for a dead body or two.

It’s possible he does go through this process, and the show just skips over that boring part. But in most cases, Colter can be seen happily looking on as a missing person is reunited with their loved ones and the cops scope out the scene. He hops in his van and leaves seemingly without ever having to provide details to the police about what happened.

4Reenie Is Always Able to Pull Convenient Favors

Reenie is incredibly well-connected, but sometimes, she seems to pull rabbits out of hats. When she was able to find details about someone who was in witness protection, that took things to extremely dangerous levels. She always seems to have a favor owed to her from the very person or department Colter needs information from for a case.

With CBS’ Tracker’s first season coming to an end, there are a few similar shows that can fill the hole until the already confirmed second season.

The most unbelievable, however, was in season 2, episode 16, “The Mercy Seat,” when Colter sent a vague call for help to Randy. He was unable to get emergency services to respond without knowing more information. So, Randy contacted Reenie for assistance. She just so happened to be sitting with a wealthy billionaire client who had conveniently just told her he felt like he wasn’t paying her enough. She managed to get him to send his private jet to pick up the injured woman. If she can pull these types of things off, everyone needs a Reenie in their life.

3He Is Often Guilty of Breaking and Entering With No Repercussions

There are so many times that Colter breaks into homes without cause, simply based on a hunch. Forget that this is illegal; if the person was convicted based on evidence he found, wouldn’t it be inadmissible because the information was obtained without a warrant? Perhaps this isn’t the case since he isn’t technically a cop. But then why isn’t he ever charged with breaking and entering?

Colter has even done this right in front of cops who are investigating with them. They often look uncomfortable or try to stop him, only to roll their eyes and go along with it, as if doing something like this couldn’t cost them their job and the case itself.

2No One Has Ever Retaliated Against Colter

Beyond the threatening phone call and letter Reenie received for Colter after the mysterious case in season 2, episode 13 “Neptune” about a missing woman who worked for a secret government operation, no one has ever seemingly retaliated against Colter for the work he does. It would stand to reason that, given how many evil people and awful organizations Colter has taken down, someone would, at some point, retaliate. It might be after they are released from prison or get off without a conviction, or even a friend, family member, or fellow gang member who goes after him. Yet this has never happened.

It might be challenging to track Colter down given that he’s always on the move. But it seems nonsensical that Colter would wreak so much havoc and no one would ever retaliate for what he has done to them.

1Colter Seems to Have Military-Style Training

It stands to reason that Colter would have incredible tracking skills as well as shooting skills. His father taught him how to hunt, how to track, how to live off nothing, which is why he chose the job he did. However, he has also displayed military-like fighting skills and there’s no explanation for where these came from if he didn’t have formal training.

While Russell joined the army, there’s no indication that Colter did any such thing after he graduated high school. Yet in episodes like season 2, episode 10 “Nightingale,” he fights off several motorcycle gang members in a bar and seems like he doesn’t break a sweat or fear the fight. In many others, he has fought gang members, even government operatives with clear training, and won. How?
