Donnie Wahlberg to star in ‘Blue Bloods’ spinoff ‘Boston Blue.’ When it will come out
“Blue Bloods” might have ended, but Donnie Wahlberg’s character Danny Reagan will live on in a new spinoff series – set in Wahlberg’s hometown of Boston.
Wahlberg, an actor and former New Kids on the Block member from Dorchester, will reprise his role from the police drama in “Boston Blue,” CBS announced on Tuesday. The announcement comes just months after “Blue Bloods” ended after 14 seasons, a decision which shocked many of the show’s actors and fans. Now, the show will live on through its Boston-based spinoff, and no one is more excited than Wahlberg himself.
“See you soon,” Wahlberg said on his Instagram story after the announcement dropped. “Somehow, someway and for some reason — there is a blessing & a lesson in everything that happens. Trust,” he wrote over a picture of his character Danny Reagan, set to the New Kids on the Block hit “Back To Life.”
What is ‘Boston Blue’?
According to a press release from CBS Entertainment, “Boston Blue” is a universe expansion of “Blue Bloods” set in Boston.
The drama series will follow NYPD officer Danny Reagan, Wahlberg’s reprised role, as he moves to Boston and takes a job with Boston PD. Once there, Reagan will be paired with “detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”
While plot details are unclear, the show can be expected to pick up from where “Blue Bloods” left off in the series finale, during which Reagan asked out his partner Maria Baez. CBS has not announced whether any other members of the “Blue Bloods” cast will join Wahlberg in the spinoff.
How to watch ‘Boston Blue’
Wahlberg’s newest show will begin airing on CBS this coming fall. While a time slot for “Boston Blue” has not been announced, it is likely it will follow in the footsteps of “Blue Bloods,” which aired on Fridays at 10 p.m.
If you want to catch up on “Blue Bloods” before the spin-off comes out, all 14 seasons are available for streaming on Paramount+.
