The One Chicago universe is vast and has created some lovely romances for viewers to sink their teeth into over the years. While Chicago P.D. brought the Burzek romance to the forefront, its counterpart, Chicago Fire, brought the romance of Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and her husband, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), to the forefront.
The couple has tackled many challenges in their relationship, navigated some rough waters, and is now at a crossroads. They’re looking to add to their family, and that’s coming in Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 20. “With the staff stretched thin, an operational efficiency expert assesses Firehouse 51; Kidd and Severide bond with the mother of the child they hope to adopt,” the official synopsis for the show’s next episode reads.
In addition to providing a synopsis for an episode that will air May 7 on NBC, the network has also released a teaser trailer that teases what’s to come. “There’s a woman in the Med, she’s going into labor…” Kidd begins, “And we’re going to adopt the baby,” Severide finishes after her. The couple heads to the Med, where they meet the woman in labor, but soon there appear to be complications. In order to deliver the baby, surgeons at the hospital will have to perform an emergency cesarean section on the mother. While Stella and Severide may not be directly involved, the couple is not immune to the stress and pressure of the event.
Stella and Severide are having a baby
Stella and Severide have agreed that in order to have a baby, Stella will not get pregnant, as she is not interested in it. Adoption is the next action item. This teaser is a confirmation of showrunner Andrea Newman’s promise that the show will soon address the issue of a child for the couple. “[The couple] have been on quite a journey this season trying to start a family… In the upcoming episode, they finally get the call they’ve been waiting for. What happens next, viewers will have to tune in to find out!,” Newman recently said.
It’s interesting to note that Stella and Severide’s decision to expand their family is an interesting one. The path the show has chosen to take is one that has been traveled many times. The adoption is welcome news, but Chicago Fire and the One Chicago universe at large have dealt with this particular storyline before. Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) had a similar storyline last season, with Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Joe Cruz (Joe Miñoso) also exploring similar avenues to expand their respective families. The repetitive nature of this particular storyline can make it feel unappealing, suggesting that perhaps Stella could have provided a fresher, more interesting storyline to support.
