In the heart of Edmonton’s historic Strathearn neighborhood, a unique and inspiring real estate project is redefining modern co-living. Forget the old adage that “three’s a crowd” — for three women originally from New Brunswick, three is the magic number. These long-time friends and kindred spirits chose to challenge the traditional single-family home model by designing and building a luxurious custom residence that would cater to their individual lifestyles, while nurturing their sense of community.
The result? A 3,846-square-foot architectural gem — part sanctuary, part social hub — that proves home is what you make it.
Built for Three, But Designed for One Lifestyle Each
This custom-designed home, built by Veneto Custom Homes, spans three levels: two full stories and a light-filled loft. Each resident enjoys the privacy and comfort of her own primary suite, complete with spa-inspired ensuite bathrooms and ample closet space, resembling the comfort and autonomy of boutique hotel living.
“This isn’t your typical duplex or co-housing concept,” explains Adrianna Chiumento, co-owner of Veneto Custom Homes. “This is a true single-family home, but with a deliberate design that allows each person to have their own private retreat while still sharing incredible communal spaces.”
The women, all of whom had been living alone prior to embarking on this venture, came together with the idea that pooling their resources would result in greater value — not just financially, but emotionally and socially. Instead of downsizing or facing the solitude of independent aging, they opted for a bold, collaborative path.
Shared Spaces, Enhanced Living
While the private suites offer sanctuary, the shared spaces in this home are where it truly shines. The main floor boasts an expansive open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area — ideal for group dinners, movie nights, or simply chatting over coffee. Adjacent is a cozy, screened-in four-seasons room, perfect for enjoying Alberta’s scenery without worrying about the elements.
Elsewhere in the home, you’ll find a full library lined with books, a puzzle and board game room, a craft studio, and an exercise area. There’s even an elevator, ensuring accessibility for years to come.
The idea, say the homeowners, was to create a space that meets both their current and future needs — a home that encourages creativity, wellness, and connection.
“We wanted to build a life together, not just a house,” one of the homeowners shares. “Every room here has a story and a purpose. It’s not just about functionality — it’s about joy.”
Crafting a Custom Dream
Veneto Custom Homes, known for its meticulous craftsmanship and innovative design, was the natural choice for the trio’s ambitious vision. The Strathearn property ranks among the firm’s most unique and rewarding projects.
“This type of build does not happen often,” says Chiumento. “It required us to listen deeply, collaborate closely with all three homeowners, and think outside the box at every stage of the design. I’d say it’s one of our top five builds, for sure.”
That’s high praise, considering Veneto has built numerous showstoppers — including multiple grand prize homes for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Dream Home Lottery. But this project stood apart for its deeply personal nature and inventive use of space.
A New Model for Aging-in-Place — and Living Fully
Beyond the beautiful finishes and clever design, the Strathearn home also represents a shift in how we think about housing, aging, and community. Rather than isolating themselves in separate condos or moving into retirement residences, the women behind this home chose empowerment. By creating a living environment rooted in shared values, mutual support, and independence, they’ve crafted not just a dwelling, but a sustainable lifestyle. This build isn’t just about architecture — it’s about connection, intentionality, and possibility.
Setting a New Standard
As conversations around housing affordability, loneliness, and aging-in-place continue to evolve, the Strathearn trio’s home may serve as a blueprint for others looking to redefine what it means to “live together.” Their decision to co-own and co-create a home that prioritizes both privacy and shared experience is gaining attention not just locally, but across Canada.
