With two worn sheets of paper used to mark the passages she had read, she shared how she was able to read the entire Bible: “Exactly one year ago, I decided to read the entire Bible for the first time in my life. I made this decision with the Evangelical Federation and today I have completed it. With these pages of the Bible, there are days when the Word of God opens my eyes, showing me precious things that I did not know before, but there are also days when it is not easy to carry out this resolution, but I do not give up, I continue to persevere. While reading, I sometimes write down things that I like, such as the titles given to God: Good Shepherd, Merciful Father. In my opinion, it is a wonderful way to live a new day. Every day I read a passage of the Bible at a certain time. There are also days when I do not read, but the next day I try to read more, always at the time I have set.”

The actress concluded with a big smile: “I wanted to share this with you and I will wait until October 1, 2023 to start again, maybe with a different plan. I appreciate that.”

In the spirit of the upcoming celebration of the Fourth Sunday of the Word of God on January 29, actress Patricia Heaton’s advice follows the teaching of the Holy Father when he proclaimed the Sunday of the Word of God. Indeed, when establishing this day, September 30, 2019, through the Apostolic Letter in the form of Motu Proprio “Aperuit illis – He opened your minds”, the Holy Father recalled the words of Saint Jerome, the famous Bible translator, who was the first to translate the Old Testament from Greek into Latin: “Ignorance of the Scriptures is’

ignorance of Christ”.

“The Bible cannot be a legacy, a collection reserved for a few,” the Pope writes in the motu proprio. “There is a tendency to monopolize it, to make it available only to select groups. This cannot be the case. The Bible is the book of the people of God. When we listen to the Word of God, it helps us move from dispersion and division to unity. It unites believers and makes them one people.”

The Holy Father encouraged us never to let the Word of God become boring. Christians must always let it remind them in a new way “of the merciful love of the Father who asks his children to live charity. The Word of God opens our eyes, opens us to the path of sharing and solidarity, allowing us to escape from the individualism that stifles and dries us up”.

And recently, at the Angelus prayer on Sunday, July 17, 2022, the Holy Father also emphasized that listening to the Word of God is “the best part”, because the Word of God touches and shapes life, transforms and frees life from the darkness of evil, especially making life full and bringing joy that never fades.

He asked the faithful to allow themselves to be challenged by the pages of Scripture, to ask themselves how their lives are progressing, whether they are in accordance with what Jesus taught. In particular, let us ask ourselves: when I begin the day, am I absorbed in the tasks that must be done, or do I first seek inspiration from the Word of God? Many times we begin the day mechanically. No. We must begin the day, first of all, by looking at the Lord, by receiving the Word of God, which is short, but which is the inspiration for the day. If we leave the house in the morning with the Word of God in mind, the atmosphere of the day will be marked by that Word, which is capable of guiding our actions according to God’s will.
