Wagner’s Life Hangs in the Balance After Season 3 Finale — Will Trent Boss Teases Grim Possibility

Will Trent showrunner Daniel Thomsen has shared a potentially grim update about Wagner’s fate in the season 3 finale. After Amanda Wagner was shot in the chest by a Founders Front gunman in the Will Trent season 3 ending, she had to undergo emergency surgery. While Will discover that she came out of surgery, Wagner’s condition remains unknown, with her life in the balance until we get an answer in season 4.

ScreenRant sat down to interview Will Trent showrunners Liz Helden and Daniel Thomsen about the cliffhanger-packed season 3 finale, and took the opportunity to ask about Wagner’s ambiguous fate. They gave no concrete answers, but Thomsen pointed to Will’s strong relationship with her, and how now would be an awful time to lose her. Given that his former paramour is in love with another man and he just met his biological father for the first time, Will needs Wagner more than ever, and the showrunners know that. Check out the exchange below:

ScreenRant: You guys have left me kind of worried at the end there, I’m not feeling super great after Will Trent season 3 finale. Wagner’s life is on the line, how worried should we be?

Daniel Thomsen: I think we tried our best to really remind the audience how much she means to Will, and that, in a world where a lot of stuff is changing in his life, she might be the only constant, so it would be the worst possible time to lose her. So, in that sense, I think you should always be worried.

What This Means For Will Trent Season 4

Will Trent is famous for its explosive season finales, but Wagner’s shooting may have given us our biggest cliffhanger yet. The premiere of Will Trent season 4 will almost undoubtedly reveal whether she lived through her surgery or not, but either way, there will be consequences. If Wagner doesn’t survive, it will mark the first major character death in Will Trent history, and have a profound effect on the main characters, particularly the titular protagonist.

However, even if Wagner makes a recovery, she likely won’t be in any position to be there for Will. He’s still reeling from Angie and Seth professing their love for each other after it was revealed their baby will be okay. Furthermore, even though Will and Caleb ends season 3 on a positive note, with Will agreeing to have dinner with Caleb’s family, there’s almost guaranteed to be drama between father and son. With Will not having Wagner to turn to, one way or the other, Will Trent season 4 could see him at his most vulnerable.

Our Take On Wagner’s Fate
Daniel Thomsen’s “you should always be worried” comment may be more telling than it seems, as it’s directly tied to Will and his relationship with Wagner. It looks like, even if Wagner survives, Will likely will, in some capacity, “lose her”, and that may cause him to spiral. We can see the stress of everything going on with Angie, Caleb, and Wagner get to him, and it could possibly cause the Will Trent main character to make an irreparable mistake.

Then there’s Wagner herself. If she does manage to survive, she’ll likely be traumatized beyond belief, having to recover both physically and mentally. No matter the outcome, the Wagner as we know her is likely gone, if not forever, then at least for a long time. Going into Will Trent season 4, the stakes have never been higher for the main characters.
