Ernie Hudson has joined “Boston Blue,” CBS’ upcoming spinoff of “Blue Bloods,” as a series regular.
The series stars Donnie Wahlberg as his “Blue Bloods” character, detective Danny Reagan, who moves to Boston and is partnered with detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.
Hudson will play the patriarch of that family, Reverend Peters, who is described as “a renowned pastor of an historic Baptist church in Boston. An open-minded, welcoming man that is comfortable in all traditions, he is happy to preside at his church’s traditional Sunday Baptist service. Reverend Peters is the father of Mae Silver, Boston’s district attorney, and grandfather of detective Lena Silver, superintendent Ashley Silver, and rookie patrol cop, Isaac Silver.
CBS Studios produces “Boston Blue” in association with JBTV. Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis serve as showrunners, and executive produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed and Wahlberg. The series will be distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
Speaking about the Silvers family at a recent CBS press briefing in Los Angeles where her casting was announced, Martin-Green said, “We have all loved the Reagans for so long, and I feel that we’ll love the Silvers too.”
Wahlberg added, “There are so many law enforcement families in this country. There’s not just the Reagans. They’re in every state, every city, every town, everywhere, and there are other families around that have stories to tell too. Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family. You can’t have Danny without Reagans — there’ll be connective tissue. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and and carry on the tradition of telling their stories.”
The Blue Legacy Lives On
CBS is keeping the blue line strong with its newest spinoff series, ‘Boston Blue’, a gritty offshoot of the long-running fan-favorite ‘Blue Bloods’. The latest headline? Ernie Hudson—yes, the legend himself—is stepping into a central role that already has fans buzzing.
Why ‘Boston Blue’ Is the Spinoff We Didn’t Know We Needed
Riding the Success of ‘Blue Bloods’
When a show like ‘Blue Bloods’ runs for over a decade, you know it’s got a magic formula—family, justice, tradition, and a whole lot of drama. But even magic needs reinvention. That’s where ‘Boston Blue’ enters the scene.
A New City, A New Story
Unlike its New York-based predecessor, this spinoff heads north to Boston, offering a fresh take with its own cultural flair and law enforcement dynamics. Think cobblestone streets, Irish pubs, and gritty back-alleys filled with secrets.
Who Is Ernie Hudson Playing in ‘Boston Blue’?
A New Commander With Old-School Principles
Ernie Hudson is set to play Deputy Commissioner Elijah Maddox, a battle-hardened leader with decades of service behind him. He’s the type who still polishes his own boots and believes respect isn’t demanded—it’s earned.
Hudson’s Character: A Bridge Between Generations
Expect Maddox to be the voice of reason and grit in a department filled with green rookies and hot-headed detectives. His experience won’t just shape investigations—it’ll challenge traditions.
Why Casting Ernie Hudson Was a Genius Move
From Blockbusters to Badges
Hudson, known for iconic roles in Ghostbusters, Oz, and Grace and Frankie, brings gravitas and humanity to every role. Now, he’s channeling that magic into the badge-wearing world of ‘Boston Blue’.
Representation and Power
His casting also signals a powerful move toward diversity and mature leadership roles on TV—something fans and critics alike have applauded.
What Will ‘Boston Blue’ Be About?
Beyond the Badge
While ‘Blue Bloods’ focused heavily on family dinners and legacy, ‘Boston Blue’ is expected to explore the psychological toll of the badge. We’re talking internal investigations, moral gray areas, and controversial cases.
A Different Kind of Brotherhood
This show won’t just be about catching bad guys. It’ll explore fractured partnerships, ethical dilemmas, and navigating a post-pandemic America where public trust in law enforcement is complicated.
Meet the Rest of the Cast
While Hudson is the marquee name, he’s far from the only star. Rumors suggest that young breakout talents, Broadway alumni, and even former ‘Blue Bloods’ actors may cross over.
Will Any Reagans Appear in ‘Boston Blue’?
Cameos Could Happen
Nothing’s confirmed yet, but don’t rule out a surprise visit from a Reagan cousin or two. CBS knows fan service, and this could be a golden opportunity for Easter eggs.
Boston’s Role as a Character
The City Itself Tells a Story
Boston isn’t just a setting—it’s a personality. From Southie grit to Harvard intellect, every episode will reflect the tension and pride that defines the city.

More Action, Deeper Drama
Producers promise cinematic fight scenes, deeper emotional arcs, and social relevance without preaching. It’s drama with a badge—and a brain.
What Makes ‘Boston Blue’ Different from Other Cop Dramas?

What Fans Are Saying About the Ernie Hudson Announcement
Social media is lit with excitement. Fans are calling Hudson’s casting a “perfect fit” and praising CBS for choosing a seasoned, commanding actor over a flashy newcomer.
