Dust Off Your Cowboy Boots: Old Town Lansing’s Wild Roper Romp Returns for Round Two!

If you randomly happen to be in Lansing’s Old Town on Saturday, June 7, don’t be surprised to see a bunch of people dressed in muumuus and curly red wigs walking around.

What is the Roper Romp?
For the second year in a row, Old Town Lansing is holding its Old Town Roper Romp, a nod to the iconic “Helen Roper” character from TV’s Three’s Company (and later The Ropers) that aired on ABC from the late 1970s to early 1980s. Helen was typically clad in a floral muumuu (or “caftan”), and wore lots of costume jewelry.

Roper Romps Across the Nation
Lansing isn’t the only city in Michigan that’s begun holding “Roper Romps” – or in America, for that matter. Ypsilanti hosts one, as do Battle Creek, Jackson and other towns across the Mitten State. They can be found all over the nation.

Lansing’s Olive Burger Festival Cancelled for 2025: According to npr.org, “Roper Romps began in 2013, initially as a parade in New Orleans at the LGBTQ celebration known as Southern Decadence.” Men and women alike participate, donning gaudy costumes reminiscent of Helen Roper, the sex-starved wife of Three’s Company landlord Stanley Roper – sometimes as part of a parade, sometimes just gathering to have fun for a few hours.

Get Involved in Lansing’s Roper Romp: The Roper Romp slated for Old Town this year doesn’t include a parade, but promises a lawn party, special cocktails, a costume contest, door prizes and “lots of polyester”. Old Town Lansing is dusting off its boots and saddling up once again for the 2nd Annual Roper Romp, an event that’s quickly becoming a local legend. With its vibrant Western theme, family-friendly activities, and all-around good vibes, the Roper Romp is more than just a festival — it’s a celebration of community spirit, cowboy culture, and creative fun. Let’s take a deep dive into what makes this event so special, what to expect this year, and why you’ll want to mark your calendar.

What Is the Roper Romp?

The Origin Story

The first Roper Romp took place in 2024, as a grassroots idea to blend Lansing’s quirky charm with the wild, wild West. The result? A weekend extravaganza packed with lasso contests, line dancing, cowboy cosplay, and enough country music to shake the dust off any tired soul.

More Than Just a Western Party

It’s not just about cowboy hats and hay bales. Roper Romp brings together local businesses, musicians, artists, and food vendors in a colorful celebration that highlights the creativity and culture of Old Town Lansing.

When and Where Is It Happening?

The 2nd Annual Roper Romp is scheduled for Saturday, June 22, 2025, right in the heart of Old Town Lansing. Expect the streets to transform into a scene straight out of an old Western flick — minus the shootouts, of course.

Why Old Town Lansing Is the Perfect Backdrop

Historic Charm with a Modern Twist

With its brick streets, historic buildings, and artsy vibes, Old Town Lansing sets the stage beautifully for a Western-style gathering. It’s both nostalgic and refreshingly current.

Easy to Access, Hard to Forget

Located just north of downtown Lansing, Old Town is walkable, photogenic, and full of surprises. Come for the Romp, stay for the shopping and sightseeing.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Roper Romp Experience

Come Early, Stay Late

Beat the crowds by arriving early. Stake out a good spot for performances, browse the booths before the rush, and stay late for the line dancing party.

Dress the Part

This is not the time for jeans and a T-shirt (unless they’re covered in rhinestones and tucked into cowboy boots). Go full Western — the more fringe, the better.

Bring Cash and a Camera

While many vendors take cards, some are cash-only. And don’t forget your camera — you’ll want to remember this one.
