David Boreanaz has been bouncing from series to series for nearly three decades — and he’s looking for a change. “I probably stay away from a series these days,” Boreanaz, 55, revealed to TV Insider on Monday, December 30. “Just because of the time and the amount of work that’s required. It’s just a lot of work. [But there’s still] some good stuff.”
Boreanaz’s most recent project was SEAL Team, which ended in October after seven seasons. While he’s ready to move on, Boreanaz doesn’t know exactly what he wants to do next.
“I don’t sit down and say, ‘That’s the next thing,'” he noted. “I have some really great work that’s paying off right now, that’s going to give me some really great opportunities as the new year comes around. And I’m not sitting there and saying, ‘Oh, this is the next series I’m going to do.’”
Boreanaz is prioritizing what “makes sense” for him.
“Obviously I’m at a very different stage in my life and career. And I’m fortunate to be able to be offered some really great things and look at them very wisely on a mature level and see them for what they are,” he explained of how the television landscape has changed. “I think the ability to take on maybe one or two different types of series would be an interesting feat.”
The actor rose to fame after playing Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which debuted in 1997. After three seasons, Boreanaz landed a spin-off series and remained the lead of Angel until 2004. Boreanaz immediately moved on to Bones, which aired on Fox from 2005 to 2017 before SEAL Team came along later that year.
“I had expressed my desire to not be on the show anymore. I was done. Whether they wanted to do two more seasons or one more season, I was done,” Boreanaz told TV Insider in August about his plans to leave before the seventh and final season. “So the writers’ strike happened [at the end of 2023] and six months later, the decision was made.”
Boreanaz cited a “few” reasons why he’s ready to move forward, explaining, “My body physically and mentally found a space in sync with the character and knew that it wasn’t going to continue. And I just felt like that was something that I was very clear about and it just made sense and it just happened naturally.”
“I have some really great things [coming up] that I feel like would fit into my game. But overall, I would say, look, one, two, three are very different types of characters, for sure,” he teased. “I would say one is really great, a passion project.”
Boreanaz continued: “A little bit like but not in essence and in a way retired, but now employed. That’s all I’m going to say. I don’t want to say too much because you know me. It’s like, hey, I live in the moment and see what comes my way. I think people know that about me.”
