TV mainstay Gina Rodriguez has found her next role. The actress is set to join ABC’s hit series Will Trent starting with its upcoming third season.
According to Deadline, Rodriguez will play Marion Alba, “a charismatic and confident Assistant District Attorney newly arrived in Atlanta. After a first meeting with Will goes awry, the pair are surprised to learn they must team up to investigate a crime in Atlanta’s gang world.” Will Trent marks Rodriguez’s return to scripted television after starring in the short-lived sitcom Not Dead Yet, which aired for two seasons on ABC from February 2023 to April 2024. The series also expands her relationship with the Alphabet Network after she co-hosted the game show Lucky 13 with Shaquille O’Neal, which currently airs on Thursdays.
Rodriguez is perhaps best known for her starring role on The CW’s Jane the Virgin as Jane Villanueva, a devout 23-year-old Latina virgin who becomes pregnant after an unwanted artificial insemination by her gynecologist.
The romantic comedy-drama aired for five seasons and 100 episodes on The CW from October 2014 to July 2019. Her other film and television credits include Future President Elena in Diary of a Future President, Catwoman in Batwheels, Gina Alvarez in Big Mouth, Velma Dinkley in Scoob!, Nora Tango-Torrez in Spy Kids: Armageddon, and Gloria Fuentes in Miss Bala.
What is ABC’s Will Trent about?
Based on the NY Times bestselling book series of the same name by Karin Slaughter, Will Trent follows Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent (Ramón Rodriguez), who was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh upbringing in Atlanta’s overburdened foster care system. Now, Will uses his unique perspective to pursue justice and has the highest exoneration rate at the GBI.
The first 13-episode season aired on ABC from January to May 2023, while the second 10-episode season aired from February to May 2024. Will Trent also stars Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski, Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, and Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner.
What does ABC’s fall lineup look like?
With Will Trent once again retained for midseason, ABC’s fall 2024 schedule looks very similar to previous years, with several long-running series, like Abbott Elementary and Grey’s Anatomy, once again in the spotlight. However, the Alphabet Network will debut several new shows this fall, including Doctor Odyssey with Joshua Jackson and High Potential with Kaitlin Olson.
ABC also continues its commitment to competition and game shows with new seasons of Dancing with the Stars, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, and Press Your Luck, as well as the premiere of The Golden Bachelor spinoff series The Golden Bachelorette.
