Heading into Will Trent season 4, the show should look to one of season 3’s most successful episodes as inspiration for the coming episodes. The ABC police procedural series has been great as of late. In fact, Will Trent has been a triumph since it first premiered in January 2023, pulling in millions of viewers and producing excellent ratings for ABC.
However, if the show was to change one thing about its formula in season 4, it should return to its roots regarding one important aspect of its tone.
Even the best of TV shows have room for improvement, and the good news for Will Trent season 4 is that the crime drama already has the tools to build on its achievements. Will Trent has been praised for its complex characters, shocking yet satisfying storylines, humor, and more.
It may seem like a standard police procedure on the outside, and perhaps it is. But Will Trent feels elevated, which is why it has been praised by many. Now, though, it has the chance to become even better in season 4, as long as it realizes what worked in season 3.
Will Trent Season 3 Became Too Melodramatic Towards The End
To be quite frank, it’s difficult to find many faults with Will Trent season 3 or the show as a whole. But if we were to make one request, it would be to bring back its quirk. More specifically, its humorous tone, which is part of what makes Will Trent so entertaining, must return in season 4. Unfortunately, the series took a melodramatic turn towards the end of season 3. Angie’s mother died in Will Trent season 3, episode 15; Angie relapsed and subsequently learned that she was pregnant; and the finale ends with two characters’ lives hanging in the balance.
The Will Trent season 3 finale features two death cliffhangers — first, a terrorist shot Amanda in the chest, leaving her in a coma at the hospital, and then, Ormewood had a seizure that felt life-threatening. As many know, Ormewood has a brain tumor that he has yet to get removed. All this drama was a bit exhausting. It makes the show interesting and keeps the audience coming back, of course, but it was also a lot to take in, making Will Trent season 3’s endgame draining. The writers injected some humor into the finale, but the darkness overshadowed the light.
Will Trent Season 3, Episode 13’s Story Incorporates Quirkiness Back Into The Show
Will Trent season 4 should find more time to interweave significant humorous segments in its episodes, similar to the dance sequence in season 3, episode 13. Will, who had been kidnapped and drugged, started hallucinating during the hour. The protagonist’s visions manifested a disco dance number at the GBI in the Will Trent episode, where almost every single character gathered to boogie down.
The scene was undoubtedly not only a highlight of the episode but of Will Trent season 3 as a whole. It leans into the crime drama’s quirky nature, which has been there since the beginning.
The dance sequence was completely and utterly goofy, contrasting with the fact that Will was in a very dangerous situation (and was experiencing immense trauma after Marco’s death in Will Trent season 3, episode 11). It was the perfect balance of comedy and drama, and season 4 should feature more moments like that.
Will Trent Season 4 Needs To Have More Balanced Storytelling
Will Trent has always excelled at finding the perfect balance between humor and pathos, which is partly why so many people watch and love the show. However, the ABC police procedural series tilted more towards its dark side at the end of season 3. So, when Will Trent season 4 premieres, the writers must return to the show’s roots and incorporate more lighthearted moments (like the disco dance in season 3, episode 13) alongside the emotional ones.
