BLUE BLOODS might be over, but we’re not saying good-bye to the Reagans for good. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming spin-off, BOSTON BLUE.
“In the new series, from writers Brandon Sonnier & Brandon Margolis (S.W.A.T.), Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD Detective Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD,” a description provided to Deadline explained. “Once in Boston, he is paired with Detective Lena [Silver], the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”
Lena will be played by Sonequa Martin-Green, while GHOSTBUSTERS star Ernie Hudson is set to play her father, Reverend Peters. PSYCH actress Maggie Lawson was also recently confirmed to play Sarah Silver, Lena’s stepsister and a Superintendent in the Boston Police Department.
The show was given a straight-to-series order from CBS for the 2025-26 broadcast season, so fans can expect to see it on the network’s fall line-up. At a recent press event, Wahlberg gave fans some hints about what they can expect from BOSTON BLUE.
“Danny does not like Boston very much, as we’ll discover,” the actor joked. “He’s a New Yorker, he’s a Mets fan and a Jets fan.”
Donnie Wahlberg Dishes on Everything BLUE BLOODS Spinoff. He also reassured fans that the Reagan family will be part of BOSTON BLUE. saying, “Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family’s. You can’t have Danny without Reagans.”
“There’ll be connective tissue to the old family,” Wahlberg continued. “But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and carry on the tradition of telling their stories and still telling the Reagan stories.”
He concluded, “No BLUE BLOODS fans will be disappointed…We are really working on this universe in a way that I think the BLUE BLOODS viewers are going to be very happy.”
Deadline reported the show wasn’t originally intended as a BLUE BLOODS off-shoot. However, after a few failed pitches — one of which would’ve seen Danny move to Texas — the original premise was revamped with Wahlberg’s character in mind. It’s no surprise CBS announced a spin-off. Since the end of BLUE BLOODS, studio execs have been teasing the possibility of a new show with our familiar favorites. In a 2024 shareholder meeting, Paramount Global co-CEO Brian Robbins told attendees, “We are building tomorrow’s billion dollar brands right now. In TV, new franchise extensions are coming for DEXTER, BILLIONS and BLUE BLOODS.”
BLUE BLOODS fans are happy that they haven’t seen the last of their favorite characters — and can’t wait to see what new adventures BOSTON BLUE will bring.
If you thought the Reagan family saga was over — think again. “Boston Blue”, the highly anticipated Blue Bloods spin-off, is officially on the horizon, and fans are buzzing like bees at the first smell of honey. But what exactly is “Boston Blue” all about? Who’s in it? How will it connect to the original “Blue Bloods” series? Sit tight, because we’ve gathered everything — and we mean everything — you need to know about this fresh take on the classic NYPD drama.
What is ‘Boston Blue’? The Spin-Off That’s Making Waves
“Boston Blue” is shaping up to be CBS’s next big hit, promising to bring the same mix of crime, family drama, and moral dilemmas that made “Blue Bloods” such a success — but with a New England twist. Instead of New York City’s gritty streets, this time the story unfolds in the historic, mysterious heart of Boston, Massachusetts.
Why Boston? A New City, A New Vibe
You might be asking: Why Boston?
Well, think about it. Boston is drenched in American history, Irish-American culture, old-money secrets, and modern crime problems. It offers a fresh stage for crime storytelling while keeping that same law-and-order backbone that hooked “Blue Bloods” fans.
Plot Overview: What to Expect in Boston Blue
Though details are still under wraps tighter than a secret FBI file, insiders have leaked that the spin-off will follow a new branch of the Reagan family — distant cousins working in Boston’s law enforcement world. Expect a mix of corrupt politicians, old mob connections, street-level crime, and courtroom drama.
Sounds juicy? Oh, you bet.
The Cast: Who’s In and Who’s Out?
Here’s what we know about the Boston Blue cast so far:
-
Tom Selleck (Frank Reagan) may appear in cameo roles — but don’t expect him to stay in Boston full-time.
-
A new lead, possibly a younger Reagan cousin, will take the spotlight — a detective navigating Boston’s tough streets.
-
Rumors hint at Donnie Wahlberg making a guest appearance, which would make sense since Wahlberg is a real-life Boston native.
-
Fresh faces are joining, including rising stars from other CBS shows — possibly tying in broader CBS universes. Could this become a shared crime drama universe like Chicago PD/Fire/Med? Time will tell.
Release Date: When Will Boston Blue Premiere?
According to CBS insiders, Boston Blue is slated for a late 2025 or early 2026 premiere. Filming is expected to start in the fall of 2025. That means teasers, trailers, and cast interviews will start hitting screens by early next year.

Don’t worry — Boston Blue won’t abandon the Reagan legacy. Instead, it promises subtle (and not-so-subtle) connections:
-
Possible crossover episodes.
-
Familiar names dropped in conversations.
-
Shared themes of duty, family loyalty, and justice.
Plus, producers hint at secret family backstories that might explain the Boston branch’s connection to Frank Reagan’s ancestors. Hmm… intriguing, right?

Beacon Hill’s cobblestone charm.

Southie’s rough edges.
