“The Missing Link: What Every ‘Blue Bloods’ Spin-Off Needs To Reveal About Danny Reagan’s Troubled Past”

The Blue Bloods franchise will thankfully continue with a new upcoming spin-off series, Boston Blue, which is set to debut later this fall on CBS. Donnie Wahlberg will return as Danny Reagan, and the new series finds Danny leaving New York City and moving to Boston. Danny, a veteran New York detective, will now embark on a new career with the Boston Police Department. The spin-off’s intriguing premise offers a new cast and expansion of the Blue Bloods Universe. However, there is a major aspect of Danny’s character that needs further exploration in Boston Blue. Specifically, it’s finally time for Danny Reagan to find romance. Blue Bloods ended on a hopeful note for Danny’s love life, so perhaps, Boston Blue does not completely abandon that idea.

Danny Reagan Never Dated Again After His Wife’s Passing

The Season 8 premiere of Blue Bloods revealed the tragic death of Danny’s wife, Linda Reagan (Amy Carlson), who perished in a helicopter crash. It was one of the most upsetting deaths in the show’s history because such an important cast member died off-screen, and the show deprived Carlson of the opportunity to depict Linda’s passing, making it all the more infuriating. Danny lost a piece of himself when Linda died. After Linda’s death, Danny threw himself into his work, but he still focused on being a good father to his and Linda’s sons, Sean (Andrew Terraciano) and Jack (Tony Terraciano). Although some characters seemed to have potential for a romantic relationship with Danny, nothing materialized in the remaining seasons.

It’s somewhat sad that Danny never truly found someone else after Linda’s death. While Danny eventually found a way to move on with his life, his deep love for Linda prevented him from ever exploring a new relationship. Danny’s grandfather, the sage Henry Reagan (Len Cariou), finally mentioned the problem to Danny in the series finale, “End of Tour.” Henry pointed out that Danny became so absorbed in his work that he’s become lonely, stating, “The problem now is…you have no one not to bring it home to.” Danny took the advice to heart, and after closing his latest case, he finally asked his longtime partner, Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), to go out on a date. However, the premise of Boston Blue could reset that potential new relationship for Danny.

Will ‘Boston Blue’ Reset the Danny Reagan and Maria Baez Romance Just as It Was Ramping Up?

Danny finally asking Baez out highlights a significant moment in the series finale of Blue Bloods. It revealed that Danny was finally ready to start a new relationship, and perhaps, Baez could be that special someone who Danny needs in his life. Unfortunately, Danny’s relocation to a new city in Boston Blue creates some questions surrounding a potential romance with Baez. Baez’s status in Boston Blue is unknown, and no details exist concerning any possible progress between the two since the ending of Blue Bloods. Baez is an NYPD detective and a single mother, so it’s unlikely that she would uproot her life and career for a fairly new relationship with Danny in Boston. It would be unfortunate if Boston Blue fails to continue the potential Baez and Danny romance just as it was getting started, but that appears to be the likely outcome with Danny’s new career.

‘Boston Blue’ Should Still Explore Danny Re-Entering the Dating Scene

Danny spent many years mourning Linda, and Boston Blue offers a new start for the eldest Reagan sibling. Linda would probably want Danny to move on with his life and find happiness with someone else. Even if Danny and Baez’s relationship does not continue in Boston Blue, it would be great to see the new series explore Danny resuming his love life. Watching Danny gradually re-enter the dating scene would provide a great source of entertainment. One possible candidate is Sonequa Martin-Green, who portrays Danny’s new partner, Detective Lena Silver. Silver comes from a prestigious law enforcement family, similar to the Reagan family of Blue Bloods fame.

Boston Blue presents new possibilities for Danny to develop romantic tension with fresh characters, providing a potentially exciting new layer to his overall character arc. It will also be interesting if the show continues exploring the Maria Baez romance that was hinted at in the Blue Bloods series finale. Ultimately, Blue Bloods fans want to see Danny happy and find love again. Boston Blue should not keep the fanbase waiting too long in that endeavor. Boston Blue is slated to debut on CBS later this fall. The complete Blue Bloods series is streaming now on Paramount+.
