No More Second Chances: Will Trent Season 3 Ends the Will & Angie Love Story

Although Will arrested Angie in the Will Trent season 2 finale, the show has left the door a crack open for a possible romantic reunion between the two, but the door slammed shut in season 3, episode 3. The ABC police procedural series follows Will Trent, an excellent GBI agent with a tragic past.

Since the beginning of Will Trent, the protagonist has had an on-and-off relationship with Angie Polaski, but their story begins long before the pilot. Will and Angie grew up in the foster care system, and as such, have been through many traumatic events together.

Despite their history, Will and Angie’s journey has been anything but easy. She pushed him away, he pulled her too close, and so on. Their relationship isn’t healthy, and Will arresting Angie at the end of Will Trent season 2 seems to be the nail in their coffin. Season 3 picks up six months later, with Angie out of jail, awaiting a hearing regarding her return to the APD, and Will returning to Atlanta after running away to Tennessee.

As of episode 3, Will and Angie have yet to cross paths. However, when they do, fans shouldn’t expect them to rekindle their romance.

Will & Angie Have Opposite Stances On Rekindling Their Romance
In Will Trent season 3, episode 3, Nico, who is clearly struggling with Will and Angie’s fallout, approaches both of them to ask about the possibility of them getting back together. Nico asks Angie if she’ll ever talk to Will again. Even though she is unsure, Angie mentions that she’ll have to see Will if she gets her job back (which she does by the hour’s end) because they’ll eventually have to work together. However, There will be a different response to Nico’s question.

Will apologizes to Nico and definitively tells them that he doesn’t think he and Angie will ever get back together in Will Trent season 3. Then, Will suggests that they eat dinner at the table he and Angie made. It hasn’t been used since her arrest, and Will’s desire to dust it off signifies his readiness to move on from his relationship with Angie.

So, while Angie is hesitant to say no to a potential reunion between her and Will, he has accepted defeat. Will doesn’t believe a rekindled romance is in the cards for him and Angie, and his certainty says a lot about what’s to come for them. If Will and Angie ever get back together, it won’t be anytime soon in Will Trent.

Will Trent Season 3 Sets Up Different Relationships For Will & Angie
Will and Angie’s obstacles only get bigger in Will Trent season 3 when they get new love interests. Will’s is introduced in episode 1 — Marion Alba, played by new series regular, Gina Rodriguez. Marion is an assistant district attorney who assisted the team during the two-part premiere, and that won’t be the last time fans saw her.

Rodriguez’s character is absent in episode 3, but she’ll return during the following hours to presumably help the GBI with their latest case. Perhaps the romantic “sparks” between Will and Marion that Ramón Rodríguez teased during his TVLine interview will start to form.

Dr. Seth McDale, played by Scott Foley. Seth will serve as Angie’s new love interest, but he won’t enter the picture until episode 8. Angie will likely cross paths with Seth during a case, which inevitably results in them dating. All the while, Will and Marion’s relationship continues to build, further squashing any hope that Will and Angie will reconcile their romance in season 3 (and possibly beyond).

Should Will & Angie Get Back Together In Will Trent?
Even if the possibility of Will and Angie rekindling their flame was on the table, it shouldn’t happen. The two Will Trent season 3 characters have proven time and time again that their relationship was never built to last (at least, in a romantic sense).

Will and Angie simply have too much baggage and history weighing them down. It’s difficult to imagine a world where they could overcome their issues and somehow create a healthy, stable dynamic, especially after Will arrested Angie in the Will Trent season 2 finale.

As for getting back together, Will and Angie’s reconciliation is simply unrealistic and repetitive when the show can just move on.

It would be hard for Will and Angie to bounce back after her arrest. After being released from jail, Angie easily gets her job back in Will Trent season 3, but that doesn’t erase the hurt they caused one another. Will even went missing for months due to his guilt.

It’s for the best if Will and Angie accept defeat (as Will does in episode 3). They can try to be friends, of course, as that is an attainable goal. As for getting back together, Will and Angie’s reconciliation is simply unrealistic and repetitive when the show can just move on.

Why Will & Angie’s Separation Is Good For Will Trent’s Story
Even though the first three episodes of Will Trent season 3 have been great, they have also been the Will and Angie show (for good reason). The two characters and their interconnected drama are at the center of the plot, which makes sense.

However, once Will and Angie reunite, it’s time for the story to move on. At the very least, the ABC police procedural series should focus more on other character arcs to add complexity and layers to the plot. For example, Amanda’s new living situation, the continued development of Will and Faith’s partnership, Ormewood’s custody battle, etc.
