Chicago P.D.: Beneath the Badge

Chicago PD Season 12 Finale Explained: Voight Turns To Old Habits As He Deals With His Reid Problem

Chicago PD season 12 ends with a mixed-emotions final hour that also wraps up Deputy Chief Reid’s threat to (Shawn Hatosy) Voight (Jason Beghe) and the rest of Intelligence. In Chicago PD season 12, episode 21, he managed to shut down the Chicago Police Intelligence Unit, something that no other villain had managed to do. It meant Voight and his team needed to work in the shadows if they wanted to get their unit and their jobs back.

Meanwhile, Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) had to figure out what to do about their wedding. It didn’t seem right to celebrate during such a dark time, and while they initially postponed it, images from the Chicago PD season 12 finale made it clear they would tie the knot. Now eyes are on what the season 12 finale means for Chicago PD season 13, premiering in fall 2025.

How Voight Stops Reid In Chicago PD Season 12, Episode 22

Voight Turned To Old Ways To Take Down Reid

Burgess and Ruzek's wedding in the Chicago PD season 12 finale

As Intelligence tried to work the situation unofficially, they kept running into roadblocks. Burgess and Ruzek decided to head to the safe house where the son of Jesus Otero was staying before his death. During the penultimate hour, Jesus was killed by Reid because he was willing to speak out about what he was doing, and now his son Renny is in trouble.

Intelligence did get a lead from the visit to the safe house, as it turned out that a cop had arrived. Thanks to another man storming the safe house, the team managed to get their hands on a weapon that had been through multiple hands, including a cop named Caldera. With some digging, it didn’t take long to find out that this cop had some civil suits against him, and he was the easiest target for Reid due to his need for money.

However, before Caldera could take a deal being offered by Voight, he crashed the car they were in, and Intelligence felt like they were at stage one again.

The man also had a similar view to Reid, and in a way, the two characters weren’t wrong. They were just trying to clean up the streets in the best way possible, seeing that the justice system was failing. Of course, they were doing it in the wrong way, and Voight couldn’t stand by that. However, before Caldera could take the deal being offered by Voight, resulting in the culprit’s death.

As Voight faced a hearing with Internal Affairs the next morning, Renny suddenly jumped out and shot Reid, hitting him in the neck. Voight stayed with Reid, seemingly trying to help him. In reality, however, the whole incident was staged, with the Intelligence Unit’s leader setting it up in motion.

Burgess & Ruzek Finally Get Married (Complete With A Chicago Fire Character Appearance)

The Whole Of Intelligence Celebrate The Wedding

With Reid now taken down, albeit not as anyone expected, Ruzek points out that Burgess jumped the gun too quickly on postponing the wedding. Sure, he was happy to do it if that made Burgess comfortable, but he knew that things tend to work out in their favor. They pushed forward with the wedding, and we get to see the church filled with people. Even Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) walked in, seemingly a little more at peace with the church after everything that had happened.
