Urban Warzone: Chicago P.D.’s Fight for the City

The cast of Chicago P.D. is getting a shake-up. When the series returns for Season 13, it will not feature Toya Turner as Kiana Cook. Why Turner has exited the series isn’t known, but she confirmed her exit in a statement.

“I’m grateful for the time I had bringing Kiana to life. Thank you to everyone who welcomed me so warmly,” Turner said, per Deadline.

Reportedly, plans are already in place to pursue a replacement for Turner’s Kiana. The series will cast a new female series regular as an ATF Task Force officer with a military background, further described as a “loose cannon.” A character’s name is not yet known.

Turner is a recent addition to Chicago P.D., joining the series in Season 12. Her exit was not hinted at in the season, and it was expected up to this point that Kiana would return in Season 13. Turner herself served as a replacement for Tracy Spiridakos, who played Detective Hailey Upton for eight seasons until her exit i the Season 11 finale.

“I’m finding out a lot about her,” Turner previously told Screen Rant about working on her character. “I do a lot of work on the scripts, but I’m finding a lot more with just the things that me and the director do, the fine little tweaks we do. We discussed so much that helped define who she was and find her confidence and get more settled. And not just the character, but me personally.”

Toya Turner Appeared in Every One Chicago Series

Turner’s casting in Chicago P.D. had given her the chance to go all around the One Chicago franchise. She previously appeared in both Chicago Med and Chicago Fire as well, but she notably played different characters. Kiana was seemingly meant to become a big part of Chicago P.D. moving forward, but these kinds of casting shakeups are not uncommon. Chicago Fire is similarly losing Daniel Kyri and Jake Lockett with the two actors not returning for Season 14.

Turner also appeared in Netflix’s Warrior Nun and Easy, with other credits including New AmsterdamThe Mick, and Empire. She also had a role in the indie films Dead Women Walking and Animator, and did voiceover work for Incredibles 2.

All three of the One Chicago shows were given renewal orders in May. That puts Chicago P.D. up to Season 13, with Chicago Fire and Chicago Med, respectively, reaching Seasons 14 and 11. There have been reports that the new seasons will have budget cuts, which may also result in shorter episode counts. It’s possible that changing budgets also contributed to some of the changes with the cast.

Chicago P.D. is streaming on Peacock.

Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire are both seeing impressive jumps in streaming this week. The shows continue to draw in audiences after their recent renewals came with a controversial catch.

FlixPatrol shows both Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire climbing on Peacock’s Top 10 for the week in the United States. Chicago P.D. has been hovering in the Top 10 all week, going from the 10th spot on June 13, to #7 yesterday and climbing even higher to #5 today. Chicago Fire has also been seeing an upward trajectory, being at the #10 spot on June 12 before climbing to #9 yesterday and peaking at #6 today. The One Chicago franchise has been a massive success for NBC, often dominating its TV ratings and drawing in high streaming numbers on Peacock.
