Fran Drescher Opens Up: ‘I Think I Missed Out on Motherhood

The Nanny star Fran Drescher says she sometimes thinks she ‘missed out’ on having kids: ‘I think I would have been a good mom’

Fran Drescher was among the most recognizable and leading sitcom stars through much of the 1990s with the success of her hit show The Nanny, and her distinct nasal voice and thick New York accent.

But come the new millennium, after the end of The Nanny, the New York native was diagnosed with uterine cancer. As part of her treatment, she underwent a hysterectomy and never had kids, something she sometimes regrets.

‘I think I would have been a god mother, the now 62-year-old said during an interview with The Cut.

‘Sometimes I think I kind of missed out on that.’ The cancer diagnosis in 2000 came 15 years later she was raped at gunpoint during a home invasion. In hindsight, and through years on personal strife, she made a correlation between the violent assault and her health scare.

‘It was strange — and kind of poetic — that my reproductive organs, of all things, had cancer,’ she wrote in a 2019 essay for InStyle in 2019.

‘But it was also an amazing affirmation that pain finds its way to exactly the right place in the body if you don’t deal with it.’

In the years she called Life After Cancer, Drescher wrote a memoir, started a cancer foundation and became a devoted women’s health advocate, in part, to help raise awareness about the warning signs of cancer.

‘Suddenly I was a person who couldn’t have children. But I gave birth to a book, Cancer Schmancer, and launched a movement with the goal of transforming people from patients into medical consumers,’ she wrote.

Drescher’s successful run on The Nanny went from 1993 to 1999
The show was created and produced by Drescher and her then husband Peter Marc Jacobson, who had come out as gay. They divorced the same year the sitcom ended, but they still remain good friends and business partners.

She went on to see more success on television with leading roles in Living With Fran (2005-2006) and Happily Divorced (2011-2013).

Drescher currently stars in the NBC sitcom, Indebted, which premiered on February 6, 2020.
