Is a Tom Selleck Cameo in ‘Boston Blue’ on the Table? Here’s What Donnie Wahlberg Says

With Blue Bloods officially concluding its remarkable 14-season run, fans of the Reagan family are looking ahead to the next chapter—Boston Blue, a highly anticipated spinoff led by Donnie Wahlberg. As Wahlberg steps back into the role of Detective Danny Reagan in a new setting, one question continues to dominate fan speculation: Will Tom Selleck return as Commissioner Frank Reagan?

In a recent interview, Donnie Wahlberg addressed the possibility head-on.

“I think we all want to see Frank again,” Wahlberg said with a warm smile. “Whether that happens in Boston Blue or somewhere else, time will tell. But the door is always open, at least on my end.”

Tom Selleck, who portrayed the stern but beloved NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, became the steady heartbeat of Blue Bloods over the past decade and a half. His chemistry with Wahlberg and the rest of the cast formed the emotional core of the original series, particularly through the iconic Reagan family dinner scenes.

Wahlberg made it clear that Selleck’s influence on the franchise remains unmatched.

“Tom is more than just a co-star—he’s a mentor, a leader, and someone I deeply admire,” Wahlberg shared. “It would mean the world to bring him into Boston Blue, even for a scene or two. I think the fans would absolutely love it.”

Though Boston Blue is set to explore new cases and characters rooted in Wahlberg’s Boston hometown, Wahlberg emphasized that the series remains spiritually connected to the original. While he’s excited to bring a fresh dynamic to his character, he acknowledges that some aspects of Blue Bloods are irreplaceable.

“I’m excited for the energy of Boston Blue. It’s going to feel familiar, but also very different in tone and setting,” he explained. “But there’s no denying that Tom Selleck brought a gravity to the original show that can’t be duplicated. If he ever wants to join us, the welcome mat is always out.”

At this point, neither CBS nor Selleck has confirmed any involvement in the spinoff. However, Wahlberg’s openness—and his heartfelt remarks—have reignited fan hope that a Reagan reunion may still be possible in the future.

For now, Boston Blue continues production, with Wahlberg not only starring but also serving as executive producer. The series promises to deliver a gritty new look at law enforcement through Danny’s eyes—this time without the backdrop of Sunday dinners, but with all the passion and fire fans expect from the Reagan legacy.

Whether Frank Reagan walks into that world remains to be seen—but the prospect alone is enough to keep Blue Bloods fans watching closely.
