“New Faces, Old Wounds: Chicago Med Shakes Up the ER in Game-Changing Twist”

Chicago Med fans had to say goodbye to one original character during the season 8 finale, but the writers might have paved the way for another doctor to join the cast. The NBC series has lost many cast members over the years, which is always sad, but it also opens the door for new characters to enter the fold. By the time season 9 rolls around, viewers might be seeing a lot more of one particular doctor.’

The episodes leading up to the season 8 finale led the audience to believe that Maggie Lockwood, played by Marlyne Barrett, would be leaving the show at the end of the season. However, out of left field, Will Halstead was the one who handed his letter of resignation over to Sharon Goodwin. Nick Gehlfuss, who played Will, decided to exit the series, just as Will chose to leave Chicago and move to Seattle to reunite with Natalie Manning. While it’s sad to see Will go, there was also a small moment in the Chicago Med season 8 finale that alluded to another character having more screen time when season 9 premieres.

Loren Johnson Returned During The Chicago Med Finale

Dr. Loren Johnson, played by Henderson Wade, first appeared in Chicago Med season 8, episode 15 when one of his young patients was injured and had to be airlifted to Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Her parents brought her into Loren’s clinic when her leg got caught in a machine on their farm, and Loren, having been a flight paramedic in the army, flew her to the hospital himself. Loren stayed while Crockett Marcel operated on her and he, along with Maggie, convinced Marcel not to call DFS on the family.

Loren returned in Chicago Med season 8, episode 22, when he transferred another patient to the hospital. Afterward, he ran into Maggie and told her he got his accreditation to run an air ambulance. She replied, “I guess we’re seeing more of you.” It’s a small moment with what could have been a throwaway line, but knowing this show, it’s likely there was more to it. The line implies that Loren will have a bigger role in Chicago Med going forward, and with the latest character exit, the new doctor could become a permanent fixture in the ED.

Will Halstead’s Exit Opens The Door For New Cast Members

When one door closes, another one opens. It’s very possible that Wade will become a series regular in Chicago Med following Gehlfuss’ exit since there is a spot open for him. Plus, Wade’s character, Loren, already has a repertoire with Maggie, and he would fit in nicely among the other characters at the hospital.

The audience has only seen a sample size of Loren in the NBC series, but he has undeniable potential. Hopefully, when the show returns with new episodes (whenever that may be), Henderson Wade is part of the main or recurring cast. New blood in Chicago Med could be a good thing for the series.’
