During a live interview on Good Morning America, Donnie Wahlberg dropped several juicy hints about what fans can expect from Boston Blue — and confirmed that a surprise guest star will appear in the premiere episode.
“I can’t say who, but it’s someone fans of the original Blue Bloods will definitely recognize,” Wahlberg said with a smirk. “Let’s just say — once a Reagan, always a Reagan.”
Speculation immediately erupted online, with many fans hoping for an appearance by Tom Selleck (Frank Reagan) or Will Estes (Jamie Reagan). While no names have been confirmed, Wahlberg’s comment suggests Boston Blue won’t exist in a vacuum — it will remain connected to the larger Blue Bloods world.
Aside from teasing a guest star, Wahlberg also addressed whether the new show would retain the “family dinner” scenes so iconic in the original series.
“Oh, we’re keeping them,” he confirmed. “But Boston-style. It’s more Irish pub than formal dinner table, and it’s a little messier — but just as full of love, arguments, and wisdom.”
These dinners will reportedly include not just Danny, but his new team, offering viewers an updated take on found family in the police force. Early scripts reveal a particularly powerful scene in Episode 3 where Vega and Milo clash over policing philosophy — only to find common ground over shepherd’s pie and Sam Adams beer.
CBS is marketing Boston Blue as “a series about justice, loyalty, and second chances” — and based on Wahlberg’s enthusiasm and the creative direction, fans may be in for a compelling, emotionally rich ride.
