CBS has announced a major programming shift for its hit crime drama FBI, with Season 8 moving to a brand-new time slot on Mondays at 9/8c starting in Fall 2025. This change comes in the wake of the network’s surprising decision to cancel two of its spinoff series — FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International — after their respective sixth and fourth seasons.
For years, FBI anchored CBS’s Tuesday night lineup, often airing alongside its franchise siblings in a back-to-back-to-back procedural block. With both spinoffs now ending, CBS is repositioning FBI as a key pillar of its Monday night schedule, paired with the debut of a new spinoff, CIA, starring Tom Ellis (Lucifer).
“We’re proud of everything the FBI brand has accomplished,” said CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach in a recent statement. “This new lineup allows us to continue telling compelling stories from the flagship series while introducing bold new voices with CIA.”
🔄 A New Chapter for the Flagship Series
With FBI now standing alone as the last remaining series in the franchise, Season 8 is poised to dig even deeper into the elite team of federal agents tasked with keeping New York — and the country — safe from major threats. While the show has long been praised for its fast-paced cases and emotional character arcs, sources close to production hint that the new season will feature a “more serialized tone,” possibly reflecting on the fallout from the larger FBI universe’s changes.
The series also enters a new era under showrunner Mike Weiss, who replaced Rick Eid at the helm following Season 7. Weiss, who previously worked on The Chi and Chicago P.D., is expected to bring “grittier, more character-driven storytelling” to the show, according to insiders.
❌ End of an Era for Spinoffs
The cancellations of FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International came as a shock to fans. Both shows maintained solid ratings and loyal audiences. CBS executives acknowledged their success but cited budgetary constraints and strategic re-focusing as the primary reasons behind the decision.
“These series were beloved, but in today’s economic landscape, we had to make some difficult choices,” Reisenbach explained.
Though the two spinoffs are ending, FBI is still going strong and has already been renewed through Season 10, confirming that CBS remains committed to the flagship show’s long-term future.
🌍 What’s Next?
Season 8 will reportedly begin filming later this summer and premiere in September 2025, although an official date has not yet been confirmed. The cast — including Zeeko Zaki (OA), Missy Peregrym (Maggie), John Boyd (Scola), and Katherine Renee Kane (Tiffany) — are all expected to return, with potential new cast additions to be announced closer to launch.
Additionally, with CIA premiering right after FBI on Mondays, fans can expect subtle references and possibly shared universe ties between the two shows — though producers have confirmed that CIA will not rely on crossover episodes to succeed.
