The ending of Matlock season 1 will have a big impact on Madeline’s marriage to Edwin, according to executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman. After a successful first outing, the CBS legal drama ended with many questions. That’s especially true for Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Kathy Bates) and her husband Edwin (Sam Anderson), who look like they may be staring down a difficult conflict for Matlock season 2.
In comments to TVLine, Urman shared what was next for Madeline and Edwin. The showrunner and executive producer talked about what it was like to arrive at a point in a relationship where negotiation seemed no longer possible, comparing it to a situation in a legal case where both sides arrive at a seemingly insurmountable impasse. In the quote below, Urman also alludes to things that Matty gave up in the past:
“I mean, it’s a 50-year marriage, right? So they have to figure it out, and that’s what I’m interested in.
“But, how do you solve something in a long-term marriage when you say, ‘I want X and I want Y’ and they definitely don’t want X? Like, what happens? It’s the same thing as in a legal case when you get to a negotiable and you’re each non-negotiable. You still have to negotiate. So I’m interested in seeing how they get through that and what it leads to. [It] comes with things that cost Maddie, too, because you have to give things up in negotiations.”
What The Matty & Edwin Conflict Means For Matlock Season 2
It’s Been Building For A Good While
At the heart of the issue between the pair is the fact that Matty wants to keep working as a lawyer, even after bringing justice to their daughter. Edwin, meanwhile, wants to go back to the normal life that he shared with Matty. She doesn’t romanticize normal life as much as he does. She enjoys helping people and finding purpose in her work over the course of the season. Edwin doesn’t fully appreciate Matty’s new experiences, feeling that she’s moving away from him and their grandson.
Whether or not Matty and Edwin will be able to come to terms is one of the questions that hang over the Matlock season 1 ending, including the mystery man who claims to be their grandson’s biological father. That may be one thing that ultimately plays into the Matty/Edwin conflict on the back burner, putting their differences to the side as they face a much more immediate uncertainty.
Our Take On Matlock Season 2
They’ll Likely Reconcile
Matty and Edwin will likely find a middle ground when it’s all said and done. The argument may well be about illustrating the degree of compromise and negotiation that’s a part of any long-term relationship. But the trick will be to do it in a way that keeps Bates in the same orbit as the rest of the Matlock cast. In any case, it’s difficult to imagine the show without the pair’s marriage, considering everything else happening in it.
