Matlock star Skye P. Marshall was surprised by country music superstar Dolly Parton, during an interview at Newport Beach TV Fest. A gender-flipped remake of the classic 1980s legal drama, Matlock follows Kathy Bates in the role of Madeline “Matty” Matlock, who joins a prestigious law firm to investigate the death of her daughter.
The show was a success on CBS, and in October 2024, Matlock season 2 was renewed. Marshall plays Olympia Lawrence, a junior partner at Jacobson Moore law firm who is Matty’s boss, and who has an initially frosty relationship with her. Marshall has received acclaim for her performance, and is looking forward to starring alongside some big names next season.
Per ET Online, Marshall was interviewed about what audiences can expect from the Matlock season 2 storyline, and how Olympia fits into it. She teased some “phenomenal” guest stars for the season, and had previously revealed that Parton was the “dream guest star” of herself and co-star Kathy Bates.
Marshall was then surprised with a video interview in which Parton was asked whether she’d be open to guest-starring on the legal drama. Parton noted that when the idea was first mentioned, she was unable to commit due to her husband’s ailing health. But, she also stated that she sent a note to say thank you, and that it could yet happen.
What This Means For Matlock Season 2
The Show Could See Even More High-Profile Guest Stars
Matlock season 1 did a fine job of integrating guest stars into the show, with actors like John Billingsley, Joanna Cassidy, and Beau Bridges. Season 2 could be looking to bring in even more high-profile stars, and, if Parton is able to appear, this would be a huge boon for the series and its progression.
t this stage, nothing is concrete, and it’s not clear if Parton would play herself, or a scripted character, something she’s done before in movies like Rhinestone and 9 to 5. The fact that Parton seems to be keen on an appearance could even lead to a recurring guest role on the show, but this would have to be ironed out.
Matlock became a big success in its first season, and its strong cast and engaging plot drove the narrative forward, concluding a season that wrapped up its arcs well, whilst leaving anticipation for next season, too.
Our Take On The Chances Of A Parton Appearance On Matlock
Chances Are Good If Schedules Align
The interest from Parton does appear to be there, but it will be a question of whether the schedules for the show and the singer can align. Parton would need to travel and spend time filming her scenes, which might not be feasible if she is on a tour, or if she’s trying to make a new record.
It seems likely that if Parton is to appear on the show, she would make a guest appearance as herself, but this could easily be worked into the script. She could require legal representation, or her role as a famous musician might be a prominent story arc. There are many ways to work a Parton appearance into Matlock in a natural way.
