‘A New Chapter’: Donnie Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods Spinoff Gets Exciting Update

The Blue Bloods universe will expand this fall with Boston Blue. Donnie Wahlberg, who is returning as former NYPD detective Danny Reagan, recently shared some major updates for the upcoming spinoff series.

Per TVLine, Wahlberg recently shared on his Instagram Story that he has arrived in Toronto, Ontario — where Boston Blue will call home — ahead of the show’s first table read. “A new day. A new city. A new opportunity. A new adventure. The same gratitude,” the actor captioned the post. The next morning, Wahlberg shared a picture from the first Boston Blue table read, where he was seated next to Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery), who will co-star in the spinoff as Lena Silver. “A new chapter,” he wrote. With the first table read underway, production on the spinoff is expected to begin imminently.

Announced in February 2025, Boston Blue, like its predecessor Blue Bloods, will center around a multi-generational family with ties to law enforcement, only instead of the Reagans, it will be the Silvers, led by patriarch Reverend Peters, who will be portrayed by Ghostbusters franchise star Ernie Hudson. Martin-Green’s Lena Silver is his granddaughter and a “rising star” in the Boston Police Department who is partnered with Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan. Maggie Lawson and Marcus Scribner portray Lena’s stepsister Sarah Silver and younger brother Jonah Silver, respectively, with former ER star Gloria Reuben on board as Lena and Marcus’ mother Mae Silver.

Could More Blue Bloods Characters Appear on Boston Blue?

At the time of writing, Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan remains the only Blue Bloods character confirmed to appear in Boston Blue. However, the actor hinted last month that fans could expect to see the odd cameo from Danny’s extended family, noting that “New York and Boston are really close.” Wahlberg added, “They’re not that far apart. You covered a lot of possible ways for people to drop in on us,” a reference to the interviewer mentioning that a cameo could come in the way of a physical or FaceTime cameo.

Boston Blue wasn’t originally conceived as a Blue Bloods spinoff, with creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis pitching the cop drama to CBS as a standalone project following a family of police officers in Boston whose eldest daughter gets partnered with a new transfer from the LAPD. However, after a script was ordered and well-received, the decision was made by CBS to set Boston Blue in the Blue Bloods universe, with the LAPD transfer being swapped out for NYPD Officer Danny Reagan.

Exact details as to why Danny Reagan would leave New York (and the rest of his family) to relocate to Boston remain undisclosed by CBS and Wahlberg at this time, with the latter sharing that it would be “a big spoiler.” However, the actor explained that, “as family-oriented as Danny is, he’s also always marched to the beat of his own drum. I think those two things can be true at the same time.”

Blue Bloods is available to stream on Paramount+. Boston Blue is set to premiere this fall on CBS, airing in Blue Bloods‘ old Friday 10 PM time slot.
