CBS has officially announced new casting details for its upcoming ‘Blue Bloods’ spinoff, titled ‘Boston Blue’, with longtime fan-favorite Donnie Wahlberg set to reprise his role as Detective Danny Reagan in a bold new setting.
The network confirmed that the spinoff will center around Danny’s return to his Boston roots, bringing a fresh narrative direction while maintaining the grit and heart that made Blue Bloods a household name over its 14-season run.
A Fresh Start with Familiar Faces
While Wahlberg remains the anchor of the new series, CBS revealed several new names joining the cast, including:
-
Alisha Wainwright (Raising Dion) as Detective Carla Mendes, a sharp and determined investigator new to the Boston PD.
-
Richard Cabral (Mayans M.C.) as Luis Ortega, a former gang member turned community liaison with deep ties to the city’s underworld.
-
Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) as Police Commissioner Leona Mays, Boston’s first Black female commissioner, known for her no-nonsense leadership style.
The mix of new characters promises to introduce fresh dynamics, internal conflicts, and rich storytelling opportunities as the Boston team navigates complex crimes and departmental politics.
Donnie Wahlberg on Returning as Danny Reagan
In a statement released by CBS, Donnie Wahlberg expressed his excitement:
“I’ve always felt there was more of Danny’s story to tell—especially in a city that helped shape who he is. ‘Boston Blue’ gives us a chance to explore that, with new challenges and new allies, but the same Reagan grit.”
Wahlberg, a Boston native himself, will also serve as an executive producer on the project.
Creative Team and Direction
The series is being developed by Blue Bloods veterans Kevin Wade and Siobhan Byrne O’Connor, ensuring a narrative and tonal continuity that fans will recognize. However, the creators emphasize that Boston Blue is not a mere continuation, but rather a reinvention within the same universe.
“This is a story about legacy, reinvention, and justice in a city that doesn’t play by the rules,” said Wade. “It’s the Blue Bloods DNA, but with a new edge.”
When Will ‘Boston Blue’ Premiere?
While a specific premiere date has not yet been confirmed, CBS has placed Boston Blue on its midseason 2026 slate. Production is scheduled to begin later this year in and around Boston.
Fans of Blue Bloods can expect familiar themes of family, loyalty, and justice—now infused with a new city, new team, and a sharper, more contemporary feel.
