The Young Sheldon season 6 premiere reveals the origins of Sheldon’s (Jim Parsons) obsession with having a “spot” on The Big Bang Theory. Despite the geek-centric sitcom ending in 2019, Sheldon’s story continues via its prequel spin-off that tackles his childhood in Texas. Young Sheldon allows CBS to show how some of Sheldon’s anecdotes from his past actually played out, as well as fill in narrative gaps in his story. That includes offering explanations for several of his quirks and oddities.
Admittedly, Young Sheldon has created several plot inconsistencies with The Big Bang Theory. Aside from those continuity issues, however, the prequel spin-off has done a remarkable job offering additional insight into Sheldon’s character. In Young Sheldon season 5, it was finally revealed why he truly hated engineers, explaining his constant mockery of Howard (Simon Helberg) and his profession. Back in season 2, the offshoot confirmed the origins of Sheldon’s “Bazinga” phrase. Now, there’s another one added to the list, and it has something to do with his need to choose and claim his spot.
In the Young Sheldon season 6 premiere, “Four Hundred Cartons of Undeclared Cigarettes and a Niblingo,” the Coopers awkwardly returned to church despite the congregation turning its back on the family after Georgie’s (Montana Jordan) pregnancy news came out. Given this, Mary (Zoe Perry) and the twins had to sit on a different pew. That was when Sheldon complained about not being in their usual seats. He didn’t particularly like the fact that the acoustics in their new one wasn’t as good. While Sheldon has had spots claimed in earlier seasons of Young Sheldon, this is the first time he actually provides an explanation about why he likes specific spots. It’s essentially the precursor to him laying out the reason why he chose the particular seat on their couch in Apartment 4A in The Big Bang Theory pilot.
Why Sheldon Chooses His Couch Spot On Big Bang Theory
From the get-go, the sitcom established the socially-inept genius as odd as he made weird assumptions during his trip to the sperm bank with Leonard (Johnny Galecki) in The Big Bang Theory pilot. However, the pilot’s most telling moment about his eccentricities was when he went on a long explanation about why Penny (Kaley Cuoco) couldn’t sit on his spot on their couch. “In the winter that seat is close enough to the radiator to remain warm, and yet not so close as to cause perspiration. In the summer it’s directly in the path of a cross breeze created by open windows there, and there. It faces the television at an angle that is neither direct, thus discouraging conversation, nor so far wide to create a parallax distortion,” Sheldon said without missing a beat. Subsequently, he continued to claim various spots throughout The Big Bang Theory‘s 12-season run including a parking spot and an infested couch in Penny’s apartment.
