The Rookie season 7 had its highs and its lows, but its biggest low is better off forgotten, especially because two exciting cameos couldn’t even redeem it. ABC’s police procedural series has struggled to find its footing throughout the past couple of years. The Rookie season 7 seemed to be off to a good start, but as the end drew near, it veered off course.
The Rookie season 7’s last batch of episodes was nothing to write home about, and it certainly didn’t help when one of the cop TV show’s most controversial traditions reared its head. It just made a bad situation worse. The episode in question was overall quite frustrating, in spite of attempts to improve the hour via two surprising cameos.
Why The Rookie Season 7’s True Crime Episode Was Such A Disaster
The Rookie Must Stop Making True Crime Episodes
Based on online reactions, it’s evident that most fans can agree on one thing — The Rookie’s true crime documentary episodes are one of the worst parts of the series. Almost every one of them is towards the bottom of episode rankings. Unfortunately, the writers couldn’t redeem this streak in The Rookie season 7, episode 15, “A Deadly Secret.”
It would be difficult to even attempt to explain The Rookie episode’s plot because it was so convoluted and forgettable.
During the episode, Nolan reconnected with his son’s ex-fiancée (who viewers had no idea was no longer with Henry), Abigail, when she decided to make a true crime documentary and then became the center of another one. The whole thing was very meta. It would be difficult to even attempt to explain The Rookie episode’s plot because it was so convoluted and forgettable.
“A Deadly Secret” was the most disappointing episode of The Rookie season 7. For starters, the true crime filming style did little to help it. Plus, the hour fumbled the return of Abigail, who was once an interesting character, and Tim and Lucy’s long-awaited talk about their relationship mostly happened off-camera when they were high (and didn’t amount to much).
Ryan Bergara & Shane Madej Cameoed In The Rookie Season 7, Episode 15 (But Their Appearance Couldn’t Save It)
Fans Will Recognize Bergara & Madej From Buzzfeed Unsolved
The best part of The Rookie season 7, episode 15 was Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej’s (of Buzzfeed Unsolved fame) cameos. Out of all the people who could’ve made special guest appearances, Bergara and Madej were quite the surprise. However, they fit well into the story and show. Regardless of their exciting cameos, though, Bergara and Madej couldn’t save “A Deadly Secret.”
Given their background, it made sense why Bergara and Madej appeared in an episode about ghost hunting. They played their characters (who were undoubtedly based on themselves) perfectly. Bergara and Madej were funny and a bright spot in a rather frustrating episode. Unfortunately, not even their cameos could make up for the disaster that was The Rookie season 7, episode 15.
The Rookie season 8 is set to premiere in early 2026.
