“5 Times Penny Was a Hero — And 5 Times We Scratched Our Heads”

As one of the only characters without higher education, Penny had moments where she felt like she didn’t fit in with the group. Fans rooted for Penny to succeed in acting so that she’d have the same passion for work that her best friends did. As much as fans rooted for Penny, however, she was a flawed character that also made fans question her decision-making. In short, Penny was one of the more complex characters and fans weren’t always on her side.

The only reason Penny moved from Omaha to Pasadena was to pursue acting and make something of herself. She loved acting and wanted to be rich and famous. Considering all of her friends were successful in their own fields and loved what they did, fans rooted for Penny’s acting career to take off.

Instead of transitioning into a sales position, fans wished Penny’s acting roles turned into a full-time career. Succeeding meant a lot to Penny and it never happened.

When She Discovered A Comet

In season 11, the gang looked through Raj’s telescope to look for Mercury. Instead, Penny found something fuzzy that turned out to be a comet. Raj did some research and realized it was a comet that’s never been discovered before. When filling out the paperwork, Raj wrote that he was the one who found the comet and got credit for it.

Fans rooted for Penny in this situation because it was rare for her to contribute to science or for Penny to outsmart her friends. Here she was helping Raj without realizing it. Sadly, Raj disagreed with Penny and didn’t think she deserved credit. It was low of Raj and fans supported Penny’s desire to be credited for the discovery

As Penny’s best friend, Bernadette set Penny up with an interview at her company. Penny bombed the interview but was still offered a job at the end of it. Although fans were sad that Penny’s acting career didn’t pan out, her transition into the sales world was a realistic storyline for viewers.

And while Penny didn’t have experience in pharmaceutical sales, she slowly climbed up the ladder and became one of the company’s top saleswomen. She soon made more money than Leonard and gained the success she always deserved.

Penny’s slow transformation over the years showed her go from a bubbly and easygoing young lady to a competitive woman who wasn’t afraid to push boundaries. Her true self came out in the scavenger hunt that Raj created.

Penny thought on her toes, was competitive with those who weren’t on her team, and used critical thinking skills to take her and Sheldon to victory. Since no one wanted to be on Penny’s team for the scavenger hunt—for fear she wouldn’t be smart enough—fans rooted for her to win the scavenger hunt to prove everyone wrong.
