Buffy Reboot Hypes Up 5 New Faces, But Everyone’s Still Asking: Is David Boreanaz Coming Back?

The reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer seems to have rounded out its regular cast members, but the news is not exactly what fans really want to know about the new series reviving the 90s series.

Previously, it was announced that Gellar would be returning to her role as Buffy Summers and will be playing a mentor to the next generation of slayer, who will be played by Star Wars actress Ryan Kiera Armstong. The latest round of casting has added Severance star Sarah Bock as Gracie, Law & Order: SUV’s Ava Jean as Larkin, and Raven’s Home actor Faly Rakotohavana as Hugo, seemingly making up the new “Scooby Gang.”

The regular cast is rounded out by Jack Cutmore-Scott, who recently played Kelsey Grammer’s son in Frasier, as Mr. Burke – a possible replacement for Anthony Stewart Head’s Giles – and Daniel di Tomasso as a character called Abe. While this is all well and good, what it does not do is answer the question everyone really wants to know – who from the original cast will be joining Gellar in the series?

Will the Old Scooby Gang Have a Role to Play in the New Buffy?

Charisma Carpenter and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Cast

Currently, there is very little known about the revival of Buffy when it comes to story and the roles that characters will play in the dynamic of the show. Sarah Michelle Gellar has previously made it clear that she would love to have as many older stars back in the series, but also knows that there has to be room for the new cast to grow and endear themselves to audiences in the same way the old crew did almost 30 years ago.

However, plenty of stars from the original series have expressed an interest in playing some role in the reboot. Charisma Carpenter recently said that she would love to find justice for Cordelia Chase’s “unjust” exit from the franchise the first time around. Juliet Landau (Drusilla), James Marsters (Spike), and David Boreanaz (Angel) have all suggested that if they were asked to make an appearance in the series, they would be up for guesting on the show along with Gellar.

It is impossible to believe that a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series will not include several throwback appearances in the name of nostalgia, but, as Gellar has already noted, this is a new show for a new generation, and it cannot be bogged down in looking back at the past. The series needs to have its own voice, its own characters, and a willingness to push forward to be every bit as successful as its predecessor. To every generation, a slayer is born, and the time for a new slayer is now.

For those who are feeling a bit nostalgic, though, the original Buffy the Vampire series is available to stream in its entirety on Disney+ or Hulu, depending on your location. What better way is there to prepare for the new series, than to remind yourself of just how good the original was?
