Actor Brendan Hines has officially made his way to the One Chicago universe in his recurring guest role on Chicago Med as Dr. Nicholas Hayes.
After arriving at Gaffney in Season 10, the charming young doctor quickly made an impression amongst his colleagues, most of all Emergency Department Chief Dr. Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos). While the bristly E.D. Chief can be icy while running the show, she tends to thaw any time she crosses paths with Hayes, the good-looking head of Gaffney’s cardiology department. Fans may recognize Hines from his guest roles on hit television series like Suits, Scandal, The Tick, and NBC’s Brilliant Minds. Regardless of project, Hines consistently delivers a magnetic performance, and his One Chicago debut as Hayes has been no different as Chi-Hards learn more about the dreamy new doctor.
Whether he’s connecting with Lenox between medical cases or treating patients with expert care, Dr. Nicholas Hayes never fails to steal the show when he joins in on the Chicago Med mayhem.
Who is Brendan Hines’ Dr. Nicholas Hayes on Chicago Med?
Hines made his first appearance as the hotshot Dr. Nicholas Hayes in Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 10 (“Broken Hearts”) after his longtime patients, conjoined twin brothers, landed in Lenox’s Emergency Department with health complications. Lenox gave Hayes the update about his patients, suggesting they move a scheduled surgery up. After Lenox later assisted Hayes with the surgery, their bond only thickened, and viewers were shocked to see a different side of Lenox. While typically blunt and unwavering, Lenox turned endearingly nervous around Hayes. Considering Lenox confessed she didn’t know what to do with her hands right before meeting Hayes, she might have a little crush on him.
Since his introduction, Hayes has returned to Gaffney several times, typically in the operating room or after conjuring up an excuse to visit Lenox in the E.D.

With time, Hayes and Lenox have become closer as colleagues and maybe more. In Season 10, Episode 16 (“Poster Child”), viewers caught up with Hayes after he recruited Lenox’s medical student for his prestigious cardiovascular department. Lenox smiled big after learning her recommendation played a big role in Hayes’ decision to hire her student.
While the E.D. Chief initially didn’t plan on joining her apprentice and Hayes during the celebratory hangout, she changed her mind at the last moment. After getting dressed up and letting her hair down, Lenox joined the Gaffney doctors at the bar and turned every eye in the room with her unexpected arrival. While everyone was happy to see a new side of the no-nonsense doctor, Dr. Hayes was the most thrilled to welcome Lenox to the festivities.
