One cop is leaving, but a new one is joining the force
It’s been fairly dark in Chicago for the Intelligence Unit of the 21st District for the past few years. They’ve lost team members, witnessed horrible crimes and murders in their city, been through all kinds of personal trauma, and even had their entire department disbanded at the end of Season 12. Chicago P.D. has never been a lighthearted show, but it’s felt especially heavy the last few years — although, it has also shown us how much the characters have evolved.
Season 12 saw Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and his team catch the attention of Deputy Chief Reid (The Pitt’s Shawn Hatosy), which is not a good thing. Reid is the kind of cop Voight used to be: old school and, well… corrupt. When the Intelligence Unit doesn’t play along, they are nearly all fired. All of their efforts to expose Reid are foiled, and Voight has to take up his former scrupulous tactics to take him out — literally.
With Chicago P.D. Season 13 on the horizon, we can’t help but wonder if Hank Voight is going to fall back into his slightly sinister old ways or if the team can come together and find a more positive, lighter way forward? Read on to see everything we know about Chicago P.D. Season 13 so far, including when it premieres, who will be in the season, and where you can watch it.
Chicago P.D. Season 13 latest news
The 21st District is getting a new officer. Arienne Mandi — who you may recognize from the latest season of The Night Agent — will be joining Chicago P.D. Deadline first reported the news on July 22 that Mandi would become a series regular for Season 13. Her character, Chicago police officer Naomi Kerr, is a former soldier and military contractor. (An Instagram post from castmate Marina Squerciati on Aug. 13 indicates the character’s last name has changed to “Imani.”) Whether she will join the Intelligence Unit or join the show in another capacity isn’t yet known.
There will be an open spot on Voight’s unit, though, as Deadline had reported the month before that Toya Turner, who played Kiana Cook, would be departing ahead of Season 13. She had only been on the One Chicago series for one season.
Chicago P.D. Season 13 release date
Chicago P.D. Season 13 will premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 10 p.m. ET/ PT on NBC. In most markets, the series will be available to stream live on Peacock with a subscription, and the premiere episode will also be available on the streaming service the next day.
All One Chicago shows will return on Oct. 1. Chicago P.D. caps the end of the night, but it begins with the premiere of Chicago Med Season 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and continues with the premiere of Chicago Fire Season 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
What will Chicago P.D. Season 13 be about?
There is no trailer for Chicago P.D. Season 13 yet, so we can’t say for sure what the season will be about. However, based on how the previous season ended and what the showrunner has said, we can make some guesses about what we could see.
Voight deals with his demons. The Intelligence Sergeant has grown a lot over the past few seasons, but his confrontation with Reid caused him to fall back into old patterns to save his team. Showrunner Gwen Sigan spoke with Deadline about his decision following the Season 12 finale. “I’m hoping next season we can find a fresh way to explore the emotional fallout and the cost for him,” she told them.
A happy ending for Burgess and Ruzek. The long-awaited Chicago P.D. wedding finally happened in the final scenes of the finale — although, many fans weren’t satisfied with seeing it as a montage. But there may be hope that we get more Burzek scenes in Season 13. “Moving forward, it will be fun to write the new dynamic of a married couple,” Sigan told Deadline. “It’s one of very few we’ve had on the show; I think that steadiness and commitment will be nice to write.”
A return of (some) group stories.
In the past season, most episodes were focused on a single character’s story in order to limit the cast per episode and cut costs. Sigan told Parade she anticipates this continuing in Season 13 — but not the whole season. “Nothing is set in stone, but I think we’ll probably do a combination,” she said. “I like the character-specific stories. I think that they help with this new parameter, where we can’t have every character in every episode. So, it helps streamline to be able to tell those stories and not notice that as much. But I also love the ensemble, and I love when we get to see them all.”

As mentioned previously, we know that Toya Turner (who played Kiana Cook) will not be returning this season — but we will get a new face in Arienne Mandi. We have yet to hear any other casting news, so here is who we anticipate seeing in Season 13.
